The copyright is 1975.

David Black is a researcher who became interested in out-of-body experiences (OBEs) and did some very serious research on the topic in the early 1970s. After the obligatory introduction to the topic, he gives a detailed history of the OBE, which is as good as, if not better than, the one in Anthony Peake's more recent book The Out of Body Experience.

Black's research brought him literally to the doorsteps of some of the foremost scientists who studied it. Scientists like Dr. Janet Mitchell, whom I idolized in my Trip Report from the 2018 SSE/IRVA conference. One of my heroes, Charles Tart, Prescott Hall, Karlis Osis, Melvin Morris, Gertrude Schmeidler, Andrija Puharich. Big time name dropping. He explains the scientific tests that were done in various laboratories, what the conditions were like, and the outcomes.

He talks about some of the greatest adepts the subject ever had to offer. People like Stuart ("Blue" AKA Keith) Harary, Ingo Swann, and Alex Tanous. He met with Robert Monroe after Journeys Out of the Body was written, but before Far Journeys or Ultimate Journey, although he discussed other subjects with Monroe like "loosh." If you don't know what that is, it's too a long story for this blog.

What's great about this book is that Black shows a personal side to all the people he met during his research. I can't stress this enough. If you want to hear the personal side of these people, there's no better book. Black is all about the research and the people doing the research: both the scientists and the adepts.

He does his utmost to bring the reader into the lab and explain what was going on, in a personal way. For example, he talks about what the people looked like, the clothes they were wearing, their mannerisms, their outlook on the experiments, and other personal details.

For example, Chapter 8, "Blue," is dedicated to Harary, but he goes into great detail about who Blue was (at the time) and what he was like. He talks about how Harary grew up "on Long Island, East Meadow, out in Hempstead, near Levittown" as well as tidbits about his parents and his childhood. He also talks about the experiments done with Harary, such as the one with his two kittens, Spirit and Soul, who were part of an experiment when they were two and a half months old. I won't leave you guessing:

"During the control periods, the kitten ["Spirit"] continually ran around the cage and maeowed [British spelling] thirty-seven times. During the time Blue had the sensations of being out of his body, visiting the kitten, the animal stopped running around the cage, did not maeow once, and seemed to be attentive to a presence in the enclosure that no human in the room could perceive." (pg. 76)

In chapter 9 Black talks about another interesting experiment (different lab, different scientists) in which Harary was instructed to go out-of-body and visit a snake in a cage:

"When Blue visited the snake in his out-of-body state, it stopped its typical maneuvering around the cage and started literally to attack. It sort of bit at the air, viciously, for about twenty seconds. Twenty seconds which were right in the middle of the time Blue, without knowing what was going on in the laboratory, claimed to be out of his body and in the cage with the snake." (pg. 80)

Chapter 11 talks about another famous out-of-body adept, Ingo Swann, who was born on September 14, 1933, in Telluride, Colorado, as Ingo Swan and he added the second "n" himself. Swann had some very interesting and amazing lab experiments. For example, he could raise or lower the temperature at a distance:

"Swann sat about three feet in front of a Dynograph which was used to record the temperatures of four thermistors [sensitive scientific digital thermometers] that had been taped to pieces of either bakelite or graphite to facilitate his possible PK. Each thermistor recorded independently of the others, and all were extremely sensitive. All four were sealed within Thermos bottles so that there would be little likelihood of their being affected by any force other than Swann's apparent paranormal abilities."

"...Seven of Ingo's ten scores are statistically significant, and five are highly significant. . . .Each of the significant differences is in the direction specified by the instructions; that is, the recordings show more change to hotter temperature in the test periods with "Make it hotter" instructions than in the test periods with "Make it colder" instructions." (pgs. 95-96)

Another of Swann's interesting experiments is when he used his mind to visit a visual target in a lab:

"Swann, sketching what he saw on each side of the partition, achieved a perfect score: eight tries out of eight. The odds against this happening by chance are approximately 40,000 to 1." (pg. 97)

The scientists took a lot of care to try to determine if Swann was actually "seeing" visually at a distance or whether it was "just" ESP or clairvoyance. This also gets into long complex arguments about whether this was really just "Remote Viewing" or whether he was actually "out of body." According to David Black:

"Swann smoked cigars and sipped coffee while he was 'remote viewing.'" (pg. 115)

Later in the book, it talks about another amazing experiment with Swann done at Stanford Research Institute:

"In the preliminary work, using a shielded magnetometer, Mr. Swann apparently demonstrated an ability to increase and decrease at will the magnetic field within a superconducting magnetic shield." (pg. 112)

Black also talks about author D. Scott Rogo, who was both a researcher and an out-of-body experiencer, who was apparently influenced by the spirit medium, Mrs. Keeler, whom I recently referenced in my previous book reviews.

Next up, Black talks about another famous out-of-body adept, Alex Tanous. Again, he gives personal details like:

"Tanous, quietly mysterious, with hypnotic eyes, looked like an MGM mystic. Part of his magnetism was an appeal to vanity. He gazed at you with rapt attention, all the furrows in his brow tending down to a point about the bridge of his nose as though they were caused by a pulled drawstring...He was born in 1926 in Van Buren, Maine, a small town on the New Brunswick border." (pg. 101)

Tanous took place in experiments that involved optical targets, like Ingo Swann.

"According to [Karlis] Osis, Tanous's out-of-the-body consciousness appeared able to adjust to its environmental situation--in certain cases, for example, he had to move his point of view higher to peer into the window of the illusion box. This ability to interact with the world in a disembodied state would not be manifest if he were receiving information through ESP." (pg. 106)

You won't really find any OBE induction techniques in this book, but there are a few scattered hints. For example:

"The experience is hard to describe," said Andrija Puharich, "but it's certainly not a trance. It's like intense concentration. The essence of it is learning how to switch the body onto automatic pilot. You switch the heart system, the brain system, the respiratory system, all those systems that keep you from getting out of your body, onto automatic pilot, and you're free." (pgs 201-202)

Here's another hint:

"Most of the conditions that can induce the out-of-the-body experience seem to involve this typical movement from a state of greater to one of lesser excitement. Dick French tended to have his feelings of being out of the body when he lay down to rest after doing exhausting physical work." (pg. 203)

Black also echoes a key point of my own book Hacking the Out of Body Experience:

"And the conditions of sensory deprivation which [John C] Lilly used to spark his out-of-the-body episodes probably work in a similar way. The disorientation which results from blocking off sensory reference points prompts the subject to construct temporary reference points which mimic those usually given by the senses; and, since consciousness then begins operating in relation to those temporary points of reference, it feels, perhaps is, freed of the body, which it then objectifies." (pg. 204)

I loved this book, but then again, I've always loved the experiments and the science behind it. Some people might find it boring, but I loved how Black made the people and experiments come to life with every page. The down side is the lack of techniques.

The book is 243 pages, with good font and margins. There's plenty of good content. I give this book 4 and a half stars out of 5.

Bob Peterson
12 March 2024

----------------------------
The book was published in 2021, although there doesn't seem to be a copyright notice.

At first I was put off by the cover art: A Halloween-style purple crone witch flying on a broom with her Familiar cat, accompanied by flying bats. Really?

But the book started out really good. I was impressed by Overman's approach and knowledge, and he wrote from personal experience. So right away, the reader learns his level of experience and some of the things he encountered.

How many OBEs has he had? He doesn't exactly say, but he does offer this:

"For every time I did get out of body, there were at least ten failures. So, when I say that I have had a hundred out of body experiences, that means I must have tried the technique a thousand times." (pg. 27)

And actually, that sounds about right to me. My success ratio is about the same: 10 failures for every successful OBE. So if you "fall off that edge" or awareness, don't get discouraged; get back on the horse and try again.

Early on, Overman joined and started studying the techniques of the famous occult organization Golden Dawn (think "secret society"...or maybe not so secret) "20 years ago" which tells me he has considerable experience. According to Overman:

"The Golden Dawn practices so much astral projection that they have been accused of "astral tourism," just going to various planes because they can, to look and see what is there." (pg. 12)

He claims to have studied "over 1,000 pages of material" from the order, and from it, successfully astral projected many times using ritual-based techniques such as the famous occult "Body of Light" technique. He shares some of this information, despite the fact that initiates are supposedly sworn to secrecy.

The book also contains an interesting ritual in which he spent 36 hours in a coffin, only coming out to pee when he had to. This led him to an intense out-of-body experience in which he thought he was physically flying.

This OBE made such an impact that Overman later built his own coffin and tried to replicate it, with mixed success.

The use of sensory deprivation is not new to the astral projection
world, and the use of social isolation is reminiscent of Native American
"vision quest" rituals.

Unfortunately, the book didn't live up to its promise. Halfway through the book, Overman talks about friends who were "witches" and that led him to the books of author D.J. Conway. He includes three long excerpts of Conway's book "Flying Without a Broom" which are more or less guided meditations. But since the book is only 59 pages, they take up a large percent of the book. He tried to replicate two of Conway's experiences, with interesting results.

Overman agrees astral projection is different from ordinary (non-lucid) dreaming, but he says:

"In an astral projection however, there is no loss of consciousness. You are wide awake the whole time. This is a distinct difference between dreaming and astral projection." (pg. 50)

That disagrees with other books. For example, Robert Crookall, who studied and collected more than a thousand OBE narratives, found that out-of-body experiences were almost always accompanied by a momentary blackout both before and after the OBE.

The vast majority of my own OBEs also had a short blackout either at the beginning or at the end, but I've also had a small number of OBEs in which there was absolutely no blackout: I had no loss of consciousness from start to finish.

But what about lucid dreams? Overman says:

"Most magicians I have spoken with agree that a lucid dream, a dream where one knows they are dreaming, is the same as an astral projection." (pg. 51)

I've always maintained that OBEs are different from lucid dreams in several ways. For more information, see my blog article Are OBEs the same as Lucid Dreams?.

I give this book 2 stars out of 5.

On the good side, the writing and editing are professional quality, it's based on personal experience, and it contains some solid astral projection techniques, even if they're from Golden Dawn and DJ Conway.

On the bad side, it's way too short to be of any value: only 59 pages in a small format with lots of unnecessary white space, and some of that comes, apparently, from D.J. Conway's book. This just made me want to re-read Conway's book. So look for that next Blog Tuesday.

A quick search of the Internet shows that Arundell Overman has lots of books out there, so I guess he's just pumping out lots of short books to make money from lots of royalty sources.

Bob Peterson
20 February 2024

----------------------------
It's kind of a vague title, but the back of the book says "The awe-inspiring, eye-opening world of out-of-body experiences." The copyright is 1974 by "Eugene Olson" which might be Dane's real (non-pen) name?

If I had to describe this book succinctly I'd say it is all "Sensationalized Grocery-store Tabloid-style astral projection narratives." It's all fast-food OBE stories, one after another. These are supposedly true stories about out-of-body experiences, but they're certainly embellished by the author the way the movie "Titanic" sensationalized the events of April 14, 1912. In fact, some of the OBE narratives are even excerpted from the "National Enquirer," a United States tabloid known for its sensationalist "JFK Abducted by UFOs!"-style nonsense.

All of the narratives are short, just a page or two, sometimes three, which makes the book easy to read, but they all lack depth.

Most of the stories are about out-of-body experiences, but several are near-death experiences as well. A few delve into bilocation, autoscopy (doppelganger), and even some death-bed apparitions.

A few of these stories are about well-known astral projection authors like Oliver Fox, and some were lifted from Robert Crookall's books and the famous book Phantasms of the Living.

On the one hand, Dane echoes the words of Fox:

"Once this stage had been reached, the student must guard himself against the appearance of apparitions and frightening sounds. These should be ignored. One should especially resist the illusions that will come and seek to interrupt the student, breaking his trance." (pg. 53)

Good advice, and I gave the same advice in my article about the "Guardian of the Threshold." But later, Dane does some fear mongering himself. For example, he quotes one of Brad Steiger's books which cautions the reader:

"And there are always evil entities which one must truly be on guard against during the projection experience. These creatures of darkness are always seeking a passive living body to invade and inhabit." (pg. 135)

Let me assure you: this is a non-issue, and as Fox says above, "should be ignored." I don't believe for a minute that an astral entity can take over your body while you're away.

In fact, I've been astral projecting more than 40 years and in all that time I've only felt "unsafe" less than a dozen times, and most of those OBEs I aborted due to an over-abundance of caution.

One of the book's chapters is titled "Sex that is out of this world" but it didn't sound very authentic. Frankly, it sounded like complete fiction to me. Maybe some editor somewhere suggested Dane could sell more books if he added a chapter about astral sex, so he pulled this out of his imagination.

The chapter isn't even about astral sex. It's more about a man who has a physical sexual encounter with a supposedly bilocated promiscuous woman. In other words, a woman who allegedly could leave her body and bilocate to the man of her choice for sex. The subject of astral sex is another topic for another day, but if you're curious I did write about it in my FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) about halfway down.

Dane also talked briefly about Dr. Charles Tart's lab experiments with "Mr. X" (later revealed to be Robert Monroe himself) and "Miss Z", but there are much better renditions of that information in other books.

The book is 192 pages, with small footprint and tight margins. I'm only giving this book 2 stars out of 5. It's not exactly "bad." It just isn't good. There are much better books out there.

Bob Peterson
06 February 2024

----------------------------
I used to do this technique a lot in 2018 when I spent a winter in Sedona, Arizona where there are a lot of hiking trails, but I still use it occasionally. Here is what I'd do:

In late afternoon/early evening, go hiking on a trail for about 45 minutes. Sometimes at the top I'd stop and meditate on a large flat rock. I used to work until 3:00p.m. (15:00), and go hiking after that.

Come home, take your shoes off, and lie face up on a couch / sofa (a recliner works too).

Close your eyes and get comfortable, rest your hands on the tops of your hips. You may want to use a eye mask to block out the afternoon sunlight.

Take two or three deep breaths in and exhale naturally. Try to ignore all your physical senses.

Drift toward sleep but maintain focus and don't fall asleep. Just try to clear your mind and still your thoughts.

As vividly as you can, imagine you are swinging your arms up and down. Swing them so hard (in y our imagination) that it causes your entire (imaginary) torso to move along with the arms. If you want, imagine a weight, like a kettlebell (shown above) at the end of your arms that increases the pull.

Focus on the movement of your imaginary arms to the exclusion of everything else. Tell yourself the swinging arms are your real arms.

When you start to feel as if you are really moving, just go with the movement and let it propel you forward, out of your body.

At that point you may suddenly feel the vibrations sweep in and fill your whole body, and your body may feel like it's not moving anymore. Follow the directions given in my article What Should I do When the Vibrations Hit?.

Feel free to adapt this technique according to your needs. For example:

With this technique mid-afternoon seems to work best for me, but you can adjust the time as needed.

A couch or recliner may be most effective, but you can do this from your bed or a comfortable chair if you have no other choice.

A nature trail (with uneven surfaces) works best for me, but if you live in a city, sidewalks may also be used.

Bob Peterson,
23 January 2024

Sculthorp. The copyright is 1975.

This is an obscure, hard-to-find book that's been out-of-print for many years. As a matter of fact, it was so rare that when I found a copy in a local library way back in the 1980s, I actually made a photocopy with a copy machine for my book collection!

This is actually the sequel to a much older book written by Sculthorp titled Excursions to the Spirit World, which I still have never procured in book form. I'd still like to get a copy, so contact me if you've seen one for sale for a reasonable price. I recently got a digital copy of the book, so I may read that very soon.

My previous two book reviews were by author Robert Crookall, who documented the early history of astral projection and out-of-body experiences. Sculthorp was considered by Crookall to be an astral projection expert on the same level as Sylvan Muldoon, Oliver Fox, Yram, and others. So reading Crookall's books made me want to read Sculthorp's books.

This book is mostly just astral projection narratives: personal out-of-body experiences by the author. If I could sum up the book, I'd say it's a collection of "reheated leftovers." It has the feel of "In my first book I forgot to say these things, and document these OBEs, but they are equally important." Kind of like my second book, Lessons Out of the Body. Ouch.

Sculthorp's OBE narratives seem genuine enough. He describes many of the same things I've encountered. He makes several interesting observations. For example:

"I have found that in the spirit world water can flow, is buoyant, and can be drunk, but it does not wet my spirit clothes if I enter it." (pg. 2)

Here's another example:

"In my out-of-the-body experiences in the Spirit World I have often been taken to cities where life goes on just the same as on earth." (pg. 20)

Indeed, so have I, and many others. It reminds me of some of the narratives from Jurgen Ziewe's Vistas of Infinity or William Buhlman's Adventures in the Afterlife.

Although he describes himself as "Not a churchgoer" (page xii) Sculthorp also describes a couple of OBEs in which he claims to have seen Jesus Christ delivering lectures, and also personally interacts with him. His descriptions are strangely similar to some of Paul Twitchell's descriptions of "The [Eck] Master" which almost seem to be semi-personalized to the experiencer him/herself. (There are only a handful of authors who claim to have seen Jesus Christ face-to-face, myself included.)

Strangely, Sculthorp often references the works of a channeled entity named "Zodiac" whom I've never heard of (and I've got a lot of books on channeling and mediumship!). It doesn't have much to do with OBE, but I guess he was a fanboy.

One of the most interesting things I found in the book is Sculthorp's description of what seems to be a lecture delivered by an iPad, Smart phone, Tablet, or a device similar to what we have today in 2024. Bear in mind this book was published in 1975, (most of the author's OBEs were many years prior), but the iPad wasn't invented until 2010:

"We went over the building where the corridors were also thickly carpeted and stopped at an open door of a room where a lecture was in progress. I looked for the lecturer, but no one was addressing the people and all were looking at an instrument on the table. It had an upright wheel over which there was a "chain" of oblong tablets linked together. When I looked at the instrument (the spirit body emits a ray or surge of enquiry) I gathered that it was delivering a lecture, with each tablet containing a subject and, of course, ready for use when required--a kind of spirit tape-recorder." (pg. 22)

Doesn't that just sound like an iPad or Galaxy Tab showing a selection of podcasts on youtube or spotify? Yes, tape recorders were around in the 1970s, but they were very big, clunky, and analog.

Unfortunately, all this book did was make me want to find and read a copy of his first book, Excursions to the Spirit World, which I'm sure is better.

The book is 43 pages, with small font and tight margins. There's barely enough content to satisfy. I'll give this book just 2 stars out of 5. Maybe his earlier, more successful, book is better?

Bob Peterson
9 January 2024

----------------------------
The copyright is 1964. It's very old and hard to find. (I was born in 1961. I guess that makes me old and hard to find too!)

Robert Crookall was a British geologist who loved to scientifically study astral projection (out-of-body experiences) long ago. He wrote several books about it when very little was known about the subject. His groundbreaking book The Study and Practice of Astral Projection, which was the subject of my previous book review, radically increased our understanding of OBEs. Since his books predate Robert Monroe's and most other Astral Projection books, I was curious what Crookall had to say about OBE induction techniques.

Unfortunately, this book didn't live up to my expectations. In fact, it didn't say much at all about astral projection techniques at all.

Crookall tried to track down the source of some of the earliest techniques used to induce astral projection. He investigated the books and articles of Sylvan Muldoon, but Muldoon credited technique articles written by
Prescott Hall. Upon further investigation, Crookall discovered that Hall got the techniques from a spirit medium by the name of Mrs. Minnie Keeler who credited her spirit "communicators" for the information.

So to describe this book succinctly: this book is a detailed comparison of "astral projection best practices and exit techniques" excerpted from the "communications" of Mrs. Keeler, against early astral projection experts: Dr. Charles Lancelin, Sylvan Muldoon, Yram, Oliver Fox, Frederick Sculthorpe, and others. And to sum it up: they match pretty closely. In other words, Keeler's "spirit communicators" generally recommend the same things as the early experts.
The remarkable thing is that Keeler's "spirit communications" seem to actually predate most of those astral projection experts' books and articles. This makes me wonder: Since Keeler was not an astral projector herself, how did she acquire so much detailed knowledge about it? Maybe it really was firsthand information from spirits of the dead? Nobody knows.

If the name Minnie Keeler sounds familiar, it may be because I referenced her in my 2018 blog article, Dietary Considerations, which I included as chapter 71 of my book, Hacking the Out of Body Experience.

But you don't need an entire 111 page book to describe their recommendations. A simple article will do. In fact, I can summarize them all right now:

These suggestions (translated to English) are from Dr. Charles Lancelin's [French] book Methodes de Dedoublement Personnel (I own a copy, but I can't read French, so don't expect a book review!):

Arouse and "super-charge" the subconscious mind by giving yourself
affirmations and verbal suggestions, preferably right before sleep: "I
have the will!," "I have energy!," "I have the power!," etc. [Muldoon also said that motivating the subconscious is of paramount importance].

Imagine that the astral body loosens from, and eventually leaves the physical body.

On the day of the attempt, little food should be eaten.

Yeah, I know it's pretty lame as instructions go. And Muldoon even berated Lacelin for being so vague. Most of the suggestions from Mrs. Keeler's "spirits" are visualizations, excerpted here from pages 27 - 29:

The withdrawal of the attention from the physical world. The would-be projector is recommended to create mental images of lights, e.g., to concentrate on imaginary ripples or flashes of light.

The loosening of the Astral Body from the physical body. "Image oneself as a point in space floating, or as a piece of cloud or as steam."

The initiation of movement in the Astral Body. (1) The image of oneself as flying, (2) The image of a twirling star suspended in space, (3) The attempt to visit the Himalayas in imagination, (4) The image of ploughing [I.e. plowing a field by hand before tractors and machines were used], (5) The image of rocking or of swinging [which is my favorite technique].

Frequent use is made of the image of a circle, or a series of circles, of smoke rings, etc.

The image of a cone is used: contracting to a point or expanding from a point, passing through a water-spout, or hourglass-shaped space. [In more modern terms: think worm-hole.]

Imagine being caught in a whirlpool.

Imagine being carried along a wave.

The image of "paying out a coil of rope," or being drawn up by means of a rope.

The image of oneself whirling [spinning, like the Dervishes] or of whirling objects.

The image of a tank gradually filling with water, on the top of which one floats as a point of light...the object is to find a small hole in one side of the tank through which one passes out.

The image of water...drawing water from a well, considering the physical body as a pool of water, or dwelling on the image of a pool of water. [Note that I often start out my technique by imagining my consciousness is a liquid sloshing back and forth inside my physical body.]

The image of a mirror, or the manipulation of one's own image in a mirror.

Concentrate upon the image of the calyx of a lily.

Imagine yourself "steaming" out of your body as if from a limp hot cloth.

It surprised me how many of these techniques are suggested by more modern astral projection authors. Many of the spinning/moving techniques were suggested by D. Scott Rogo.

Here are some more exit techniques, excerpted from pages 70 - 71:

Concentrate a yard or two in front of my body and to "try and get towards that place."

Concentrate on a spot above your head, instead of in front, and to try and rise from your body.

Concentrate one foot seven inches above your head.

Imagine breathing through your ears and to tell about, from time to time, what you see.

Sit erect, not touching the chair back, and to concentrate on a horizontal bar above the line of sight; to hold breath when there is a feeling of rising; but in general to be more passive and to let the spirits do the work.

Brace hands and feet and contract muscles of stomach in order to force the Astral Body out; and to imagine the physical body falling.

Imagine ascending a flight of steps which tip toward you, then to take hold of a silk rope and jump off, kicking the steps away, and filling the lungs at the same time.

Try moving forward horizontally in a straight line.

Imagine revolving rapidly on tiptoe, finally springing up.

Imagine a disc three inches in diameter revolving rapidly seven inches in front of your eyes.

Imagine sitting in a swing with long ropes, swinging back and forth and sending impulses in the same direction as the swing at the end of each swing.

Imagine flying slowly and steadily in any direction.

Imagine being a soap bubble, blown in any direction.

Imagine going to the Himalayas through the air.

Imagine a point two feet in front of your throat, and to see it coming towards you until you merge with it and become a point.

Like the previous list, many of these techniques are given by more modern astral projection authors. In my first book I stressed the need to be completely passive (as per #5). Many authors suggest imagining climbing a rope (as per #7, although Robert Bruce added the twist of using only tactile, not visual, imagination). The spinning disc technique (#10) was mentioned by Graham Nicholls. The swinging technique (#11) is very similar to one in my first book.

In short, Mrs. Keeler's "spirit communicators" suggested most of the modern astral projection techniques long before they were found in any astral projection books. That's not to say any of these authors plagiarized the works of Mrs. Keeler or of Prescott Hall. I stumbled upon many of my own techniques through personal experimentation.

The book is fascinating from a historical point of view, but not very useful from a practical point of view. It's 111 pages with small font and slim margins.

I'll give the book just 2 stars out of 5. The book is well written, the grammar is perfect, and I only spotted one typo. But there are a lot better technique books out there now.

Bob Peterson
12 December 2023

----------------------------
Without further ado:

In the past I've talked about how the right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ) of the brain formulates a "Story of Experience" based on the data it gets from the physical senses. To induce an out-of-body experience (OBE) you need to "derail" the rTPJ, force it to jump its tracks, and introduce an alternate "story of experience".

The brain's rTPJ is located close to the auditory area of the brain, and one component of its "story of experience" is based on our sense of balance, which comes from the inner ear. If your inner ear becomes infected, plugged, damaged, or altered by drugs (such as caffeine) it can affect your sense of balance, and that affects your story of experience. These are known as vestibular problems.

But people with vestibular problems tend to have more out-of-body experiences than people who don't, and you can take advantage of that.

One technique to induce mystical states of consciousness that dates back at least to the twelfth century is the spinning dances of the "Whirling Dervishes" (Mevlevi or "Sufi" order of Islam, centered mainly in Turkey) which force a temporarily altered story of experience.

It turns out that some people have the ability to move the muscles in the inner ear, and that can be leveraged to alter their vestibular system to induce an OBE.

This technique comes from someone in the "Astral Projection" group by the name of Ælfweald

Since I was a child I could make a humming like noise in my ears. I
never thought much of it but I would do it sometimes for fun, maybe
to the beat of a song. I forget exactly how I figured this out but I
did. I have seen many others online who can do the same thing with
the ear humming...

There is a muscle in
the inner ear called the tensor tympani. Some people can contract it
voluntarily and make a humming or roaring like noise. Very similar to
what many people hear right before or doing AP.

One night I was
sleeping and awoke enough to become aware I could possibly [astral] project.
For some reason and I’m not even sure why I had the idea, I tried
it. I made the humming noise and held it which I can do for some
time. I was surprised with what happened next. I successfully left
[my body] but it was much more intense and I was way more aware than any time
I’d done it before. I could even come back at will and shoot back
out by just tightening the muscle.

I'd be interested to hear other people's experiences with this technique.

Bob Peterson,
28 November 2023

This was one of the first books I read on the subject in the 1980s.

If I had to sum up this book in a few words, I’d say two things: first, that it’s mostly out-of-body narratives (people’s personal experiences) and second, that it was one of the earliest attempts at a “definitive” survey on OBEs, surpassed only by William Buhlman’s outstanding book from 2001, The Secret of the Soul.

If you've been following my blog, you know how much I love OBE narratives. In fact, reading them before bed often helps people induce their own OBEs. This book has got them.

Crookall divides this book into two sections: Natural OBEs and Enforced OBEs. The "natural" OBEs are divided into 4 groups: cases in which the people nearly died (NDEs), were very ill, were exhausted, and were in good health. The "enforced" OBEs are those induced by anesthetics, suffocation, falling, hypnosis, etc. There are also several appendixes. In fact, the appendixes make up about a third of the book:

History of the subject (which is only rivaled by Anthony Peake's excellent book, The Out of Body Experience).

Additional details.

Incomplete natural experiences.

Certain "dreams" that may be OBEs.

Statements of the "dead" regarding their experiences (from spirit mediums).

Statements of the "dead" regarding sleep (from spirit mediums).

Arnold Bennett's resume of Theosophical Teachings.

"Thought Forms".

Evidence, Direct and Indirect.

The first time I read this book, I was fascinated by the OBE narratives and the science behind the analysis, but in retrospect, I could never have fully appreciated the book because I didn't have the history or context I do today. Today I can fully appreciate the book. Unbeknownst to me when I read it in the 1980s, Crookall gives astral projection narratives (and summaries) from some of the biggest names in the genre: Sylvan Muldoon, Oliver Fox, Yram, Horace Leaf, Frederick Sculthorp, Vincent Turvey, Alexandra David-Neel, etc.

Crookall doesn't give many techniques to induce the OBE state. I only found one, on page 74:

"My method is to imagine the astral body vibrating faster and faster--to imagine it so hard that I can actually feel it." (pg. 74)

He does, however, give a few hints here and there, such as:

"Prolonged illness and fasting are among the factors that favour the production of these experiences." (pg. 21)

"It is just as if the astral body were a train seeking an opportunity to slip away without its passenger--which does seem to be the case, for I find that if I let my attention wander for only a moment, all is lost, and I am asleep." (pg. 75)

In chapter 24 of my first book, when I described my preferred technique, I stressed the need to make your mind completely blank, devoid of thoughts and emotions. (You can read it at this link.) Not many AP/OBE books talk about that. So I was pleasantly surprised to find this in the narrative for Case 78:

"She said, 'When entirely quiescent, one seems to move out of the Physical Body.'" (pg. 82)

With so many narratives, the book also contains some interesting cases of OBEs in which verifiable evidence was obtained. For example,

"...He said that he woke just before 7 a.m. feeling as if he were fully dressed and that he suddenly saw my room, with me in bed. The only unusual thing he noticed was that the white cot, which was generally in the nursery, was at the foot of our bed with the child in it. He whistled to me, and leaned over the cot. The child sat up and spoke and he was turning to come over to me when he heard a tap at the door and the whole thing vanished...The times were identical and he could not possibly have known that the child's cot was in my room unless he had seen it. I had not told him that the child was ailing." (pg. 108)

Here's another:

"While unconscious, she felt herself leave her body and immediately found herself in her husband's bedroom, at home, many miles distant from the hotel. A man, a friend and neighbour, was asleep in the same room as her husband. Leaning against the head of the bed was a stout cudgel which had some bark still attached. The room itself was in great disorder. She stroked her husband's face and tried to awaken his friend. But she remained unobserved by them...[After returning to her body]...
The doctor told her that she had been given up as dead. She described her experience. The doctor checked up with the story and every detail was verified. It turned out that her husband's friend had come to spend the evening at the house. During his visit a rat ran across the floor. They hunted it with a club which had part of the bark on. They upset furniture in doing so. The friend stayed the night, the club being left handy in case the rat returned during the night." (pgs. 131-132)

The book is 234 pages long with small font and big margins. There's plenty of material there to satisfy.

The writing and editing are professional, but the material is outdated. I only found a few minor typos. I give this book 4 stars out of 5.

Bob Peterson
05 September 2023

----------------------------
That's the topic of this article.

According to scientists (e.g. Irwin, Gabbard and Twemlow, Crookall, etc.) OBEs are normally much more memorable than ordinary dreams. Most people who have had OBEs have had only one, and it was so remarkable they never forget it. However, people who learn to self-induce OBEs (have multiples) sometimes have trouble remembering them.

There are a few reasons. First, as they learn to prolong the state, they're left with longer periods of time to remember. A forty-five minute OBE can be filled with hundreds of little "this happened, then this happened, then this happened." The struggle it real!

Second, after a while, OBEs can become less remarkable and unique, so they don't stand out as much in your mind. ("I flew over the city for the hundredth time. Yawn.")

Third, OBEs can become more like waking life, so they're more subject to your "subconscious wastebasket" which I talk about below.

Very few astral projection authors address the subject of retaining OBE memories. One of them is Robert Bruce, author of Astral Dynamics. Bruce put a lot of emphasis on memory, insisting that we often have lots of astral projections, but we forget most of them. He wrote that we have "shadow memories" during astral projections that need to be "downloaded" to the physical body when we return to it. He blames most memory problems on a "mind split" during OBEs in which our awareness is split between physical and astral (with even more splits possible), each of which records its own set of memories. The physical body memories can overwrite the astral memories and vise versa. Unfortunately he isn't very clear on how exactly to overcome that. He does, however, give some hints. He says:

"...But projection memories are generally easier to recapture from a tranced or semitranced state than if the physical/etheric minds are allowed to enter the deep sleep state." (pg. 71)

He seems to imply you'll remember your OBE better if you force yourself back to full body consciousness after the OBE rather than if you fall back asleep.

I don't agree with his "shadow memory" theory, but it's an interesting discussion and there's some overlap between his suggestions and mine.

Here are some more tips to help you remember your OBEs:

1. Keep a Dream Journal

I talked about this in a blog article from 2015 called "Why Keeping A Dream Journal Helps OBEs" that talks about why, when we walk into a room, we sometimes forget why. In a nutshell, when you move from one room to another, your subconscious compartmentalizes some memories as no longer relevant to your situation. Your plans were made in a different room, so they pertain to that room, and not the one you're in.

The same thing occurs when you go from waking to sleeping. Without discipline your subconscious may discard those memories on the same principle.

One way to combat the "subconscious wastebasket" is to keep a dream journal. The journal isn't as important as the fact that it forces you to exercise carrying your memories across the border between waking and sleeping. That includes dreams, lucid dreams, and OBEs.

Here's an excerpt from that article:

You've got to make it [journaling your experiences] a habit. Here are some things to jump-start the process:

Take vitamin B-6 before bed. Don't take more than 100mg per day.
Don't take it every day. Take it for a few days, then stop for a few
days. For some reason, this seems to help with dream recall.

Before you go to sleep, tell yourself, "Tomorrow morning, I'm going to remember my dreams."

After that, imagine yourself in the morning. You wake up. You sit up in bed and recall the dreams you just had.

Tell yourself, "Yes, that's exactly what I'm going to do."

Repeat steps 3 and 4 a few times. Then go to sleep.

In the morning, sit up, close your eyes and try to remember anything
you can about the dreams you just had. Focus on any little fragment
that comes in. "It had something to do with a man" Then follow it where
it takes you. "The man was trying to take me somewhere..." And so forth.

Once you're up, write down your dream. If you're too busy, just write down some keywords that will trigger your memory later.

Perform these steps every day so that keeping a dream journal becomes a habit.

2. Write down OBEs immediately

People have short-term and long-term memories, and they're usually based on the importance of the event and whether your subconscious thinks you're going to need to recall them "soon." Short-term memories can fade very quickly if not written down immediately. It may be very tempting to wake up in the middle of the night and tell yourself, "That dream (or OBE) was so unusual I'll never forget it. I'll remember it for sure," and roll over, back to sleep. But guess what? There's a good chance you'll forget it. So do yourself a favor and write dreams and OBEs down right away.

3. Use memory jogs when you wake

Writing a dream journal or an OBE journal can get tedious, especially if they happen in the middle of the night. It takes time, and in the morning we're often focused on our morning routine, getting ready for work, and whatever else needs to get done.

Instead, write down short memory fragments to jog your memory later. Write down just a few keywords to help you remember, and flesh it out later in your dream journal. For example, last night I wrote down this dream jog: "Unruly iguana spinning its tail" and another: "Asking Eric about his level in Candy Crush."

The simple act of re-reading those short memory jogs helps you recall the dreams later. The value is that you've trained your subconscious to keep those memories more accessible to your conscious mind.

4. Affirmations before and during your AP

The "memory dump" is controlled by your subconscious mind, and your subconscious can be programmed by tools like affirmations. So think to yourself, "It's important that I remember my experience." The simple act of repeating this to yourself can make a big impression on your subconscious.

5. Try Galantamine

About ten years ago, researchers realized that the drug Galantamine, which is used in the treatment of Alzheimer's, often helps people induce lucid dreams and out-of-body experiences. But Galantamine is a memory booster. (Well, technically, it's an acetylcholinesterase
inhibitor (AChEl), which
means it blocks the
breakdown of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, a
molecule that supports
memory).

At any rate, it's possible that the drug may help bridge the connection between nonphysical experiences and memory retention of those experiences.

I don't know about the rest of the world, but in the United States, it's readily available without a prescription as a supplement from vitamin shops, especially online shops like "vitacost.com"

6. Use smells / scents

Scientists have known for a long time that memories are linked to the olfactory sense (sense of smell) in the brain. Certain smells often bring back powerful memories. For example, perfumes can bring back powerful memories of a woman you used to know. That's nothing new.

What is new is that the sense of smell is more generally and widely connected to memory. I recently (August 2023) read an article from the University of California (click here) where neuroscientists were able to boost cognitive function and memory in older adults by 226 percent just by exposing them to certain smells with a diffuser while they slept. That's major. I've always kind of poo-pooed the idea of essential oil mixtures designed for astral projection, but it warrants further investigation. With that in mind, you may be able to enhance your memory by:

Burning incense

Burning a scented candle

Use scented essential oils

Use a diffuser to add smells to your bedroom

Or even just opening a window

7. Use associations to condense the OBE

Memory experts often use little tricks like associations to jog their memories. This applies to life in the physical world as well as OBEs. One trick is to condense an important concept into something that's easier to remember.

For example, when people learn music, they're often taught "Every Good Boy Deserves Favor" to remember the musical scale (EGBDF). Kids are taught the colors of the rainbow: "Roy G. Biv" (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet). Mechanics are taught "Righty-Tighty, Lefty Loosy."

Another example: my wife Kathy remembers one of our neighbors (whom we hardly ever see) is "Elaine" because she's like her mom's friend "Eileen" even though it's spelled differently. I know it sounds weird, but sometimes I exercise my memory by trying to remember license plates of other cars while I'm driving. I might see a license plate "VFW 731" and I think "very fine work..." It's weird, but it kind of works.

So during the experience, try to find associations like this or even just a keyword you can latch onto in the future.

8. Maximize the impact of your OBEs

Almost everyone over the age of 30 remembers exactly where they were and what they were doing when the planes crashed into the World Trade Center on 9/11/2001. Older folks remember where they were and what they were doing when Neil Armstrong landed on the moon, or when US President Richard Nixon resigned, or when Princess Diana died. That's because these events made a huge lasting impression. They impacted our psyche.

So you can remember your OBEs better if they make a strong impact.

At the beginning of the article I talked about how OBEs can lose their impact if they become too ordinary. So when you have an OBE, try to enforce the memory in your subconscious by going over it (and over it, and over it) several times in your memory and think to yourself, "Holy crap! I was just out of my body!" or something even if it only lasted a few seconds. Make an impression on your subconscious.

Conclusions

I believe the biggest factor is just training your subconscious not to discard (or file away) your memories of nonphysical events. That comes with discipline and practice.

Bob Peterson,
08 August 2023

The book is copyrighted 1996.

I love this book, and I love the author, Carol Eby. Partway through the book, I actually found myself fantasizing about "what might have been" if I had met her before I met my wife of 32 years, Kathy, in 1988. It might have been a match made in, well, yes, Heaven. Or at least the astral plane. From her writing, she just seems like a kindred spirit. Why am I so enthralled? I suppose it's because she seems a lot like me, and her journeys seem to parallel my own. She shares my same scientific bent, my insatiable curiosity, and my same objectivity.

The book has many OBE narratives, which won my heart, none of which were over-the-top or ostentatious. They're just ordinary OBEs, chronicles of her experiments with the non-physical, and her personal observations. Like Robert Monroe or William Buhlman. From the start she tells us who she is (a chemist by profession) and how she got involved with OBEs.

Toward the beginning of the book, Eby lives alone in a cabin in the secluded forests of the Black Hills of South Dakota, not far from Mount Rushmore. I currently live in a forest in rural Minnesota and many of my early OBEs happened in my mom's cabin in a somewhat secluded forest of Minnesota.

Her first OBE was on May 5, 1978, just a year and a half prior to my own first OBE on November 2, 1979.

The first two thirds of the book are an introduction to the subject of out-of-body experiences, and like a good scientist, she cites references for important statements. Lots of references. And her references aren't for the timid: she presents findings from authors like H.J.Irwin, Herbert Greenhouse, D.Scott Rogo, Susan Blackmore, Sylvan Muldoon and others, and not just books, but scientific articles as well: Eby's really done her homework.

Eby spends a lot of time analyzing the various states of consciousness, both from a scientific point of view, and from her own personal experience. She spends a lot of time describing and analyzing the phases of sleep, especially the hypnagogic and hypnopompic states; a lot more than other OBE books. She discusses the various sleep states and the transitions from one to the other. For example:

"Sometimes when I go from an OBE into a dream, it is similar to going from a normal waking state into a dream..." (pg. 18)

"Passing from a dream to an OBE is similar to passing from a dream to physical wakefulness, only instead of awakening in my physical body, I awaken in my astral body, which can be in the same room as my physical body, in another part of the house, or farther away." (pg. 18)

I loved this passage:

"The first time I voluntarily left my physical body and entered the astral plane fully alert, I was astonished that my consciousness actually could exist outside my physical form. As is typical of others who have had even brief OBEs, I no longer believed I had a 'soul,' I knew it. I was amazed at how absolutely solid and real the astral plane appeared--as convincing as physical waking reality..." (pp. 125-126)

I know for sure Carol Eby speaks from experience because she describes things in the OBE state that many books don't, and things I've personally experienced. For example:

"I have also heard ordinary sounds distorted with a strange, eerie, off-key resonance; my voice and my piano have sounded tinny and out of tune." (pg. 130)

That's spot on, and it's something I've personally experienced, and is very rarely talked about.

She also talks about how, in an OBE, you kind of lose your sense of orientation. The walls or ceilings can seem like floors, and she describes that quite well too:

"The strange thing was that every position felt right side up, which made viewpoint and perspective confusing. I was amazed that I could become so disoriented in my own cabin, where I had been living for most of the previous five years." (pp. 165-166)

She's also one of very few people who, during an OBE, saw a figure who looked like depictions of Jesus Christ, which she never expected. (Pg. 134 and pp 204-205)

One thing I found interesting is that she describes a precognitive dream that was bathed in a strange blue light, which is much like Graham Nicholls's precognitive OBEs.

Another thing I found fascinating is how she made a distinction between visualization and hypnagogic imagery:

"It is important to distinguish between two types of mental imagery; one type, caused by the imagination, seems to originate and take place inside the brain, behind and above the eyes, and the other type, hypnagogic imagery, seems to manifest through the inside of the eyelids. Mental pictures caused by the imagination are more deliberate than hypnagogic imagery, which seems to appear by its own volition from outside the mind." (pg. 80)

Eby spends a lot of time explaining the hypnagogic (pre-sleep) and hypnopompic (post-sleep) states of sleep, and most of her OBEs seemed to be from the hypnopompic state.

"Even without a lucid dream, the hypnopompic state is conducive to an OBE. It is necessary to simultaneously prolong the waking process and prevent falling back to sleep." (pg. 99)

There's also a very personal touch. Many of her OBE narratives chronicle her many attempts to contact her friends, primarily "Judi," which often ended prematurely, ended in ADD distractions, or outright failure, which closely echo my own frustrated attempts to contact my friend "LD" (Lisa) in my first book.

Eby presents one OBE with veridical evidence from her friend, Sue. Sue was worried about her friend Bob, and apparently visited him in an out-of-body experience. Bob was working at a pharmacy at the time, and Sue saw him dressed in his white blazer:

"Bob said he knew she had been worried and apologized for the way he had dropped the previous phone conversation. Then he mentioned that while he had been at work, he had said out loud, "I'll call you between 5:00 and 5:30." The other pharmacist, a female, who had been working with him asked, "Why?" Bob, unaware that he had spoken out loud, asked, "Why what?" Puzzled, the female pharmacist asked, "Why are you going to call me between 5:00 and 5:30?" "What!?" Bob replied.
"When Sue heard this, she realized that she had actually been to the pharmacy--in astral form." (pg. 100)

In spite of this, most of Eby's OBEs had elements that did not match up with physical reality, and in a way that makes them more interesting. For example, she would lie down in bed snug under her blankets, but after leaving her body, she saw her blankets crumpled up in a ball on the floor. At the time, she knew full well that what she saw did not match physical reality. And that leads to some interesting discussion about the nature of out-of-body perception: Is it subjective or objective? Is it an echo of the physical world or just mind-stuff? I loved this passage:

"Susan Blackmore, who has written extensively about OBEs, contends that they are internal and that the mental constructions are based upon memory. According to Blackmore, the distortions, omissions, and additions to the astral world reported by so many projectors result from faulty memory, with gaps filled by imagination.

From my experience, I believe that during my OBEs, when aberrations appear in the astral world, my memory is working about as well as in physical waking. When I saw the framed print of the old woman on my fireplace mantel, I knew, from memory, that it was not there physically." (pg. 236)

In chapter 6, "Between Worlds," Eby describes exit symptoms and gives five procedures (techniques) to induce OBEs. In a nut shell, her techniques are:

From a state of deep relaxation, she uses autosuggestion, visualization of a black screen, and imagination of vibration. If hypnagogic images appear, she "thinks" them away "so that my mental screen remains black." (pg. 153)

That's an interesting idea; I always assume control of them and use them as an anchor to the "other side."

From the hypnopompic state, sink back and imagine you're rocking back and forth or side-to-side. (This is also one of my go-to techniques.)

Count back from 10 or 20 to 1, using progressive relaxation and autosuggestion toward having a lucid dream, then dispel the dream.

From full waking, drift into the hypnagogic state. She says that she either falls asleep or gets up, thinking she's in the physical world, but she discovers she's really in the astral.

From the hypnagogic or hypnopompic state, visualize any place you want to go. (AKA the Target Technique).

As always, my short descriptions don't match the actual text that goes much more in depth, so by all means: read the book for yourself.

After reading a lot of mediocre-to-bad books on astral projection/out-of-body experiences, it's wonderfully refreshing to encounter a really good book like this.

The book is 244 pages with smallish margins and font (although I didn't need reading glasses), which means there's a lot of good content. The writing was engaging and professional. The grammar and spelling were flawless. There is nothing negative about this book to complain about.

I give this book 4 and 1/2 stars out of 5. I would have given it 5 if the techniques section was a bit bigger.

Bob Peterson
18 July 2023

----------------------------
of my earliest life-lessons was when I learned to play chess when I was
in elementary (primary) school. My older brother, Joe, taught me how to play, and he
coached me and gave advice. I was hooked and couldn't get enough. Every day after school, we played game after game, as much as he would tolerate.

In spite of all his help, Joe had no mercy. He ruthlessly defeated me, beating me game after
game after game. He kicked my ass bloody. But he also explained what I had done wrong. I'm not sure what he got out of it, but I know what it did for me: it made me a better chess player. My focus and determination grew and my chess skills
slowly improved. After what seemed like years, I matched Joe's skills and won about half the time.

One
day after school, at a friend's request, I visited a chess club that
was holding a tournament for middle-school ("junior high") players. I played a few
games of chess against their best players and I won every game. These kids were years
older than me, and I went home undefeated, with a super-inflated ego. One of them said, "Next year, when you graduate to middle-school, you should join our chess club."

In middle-school I soon learned that if you only play against the same player, you may learn to defeat him/her very well, but you still may be no match for other players with different strategies.

Years later, when I got to high school, my interests changed from chess to computers. I started visiting the University of Minnesota for free "continuing education" computer classes. That's when I heard about an upcoming chess tournament at the University. A little scared and anxious, I scraped together the money and entered the tournament.

On the day of the chess tournament I was very nervous, but defeated my first two opponents in close victories. My third opponent kicked my ass. He just took me apart, handed my ass to me, and I went home defeated, with a broken and defeated ego. It's a good thing I was good at computers!

Nowadays I play chess on my phone, and my phone usually kicks my ass. It's still fun.

What does all this have to do with astral projection or out-of-body experiences? It's all in the lessons.

My
lessons from the chess board were:

You can't get better at chess or anything in life by playing weaker
opponents.

You learn best by playing superior opponents and overcoming obstacles.

It's good to broaden your skills by playing different players, not just the same opponent over and over.

You only "lose" if you
give up and stop working toward your goals.

Don't take defeats to heart: see them as lessons, or baby steps, and move on.

Don't take victories to heart either: there's always someone better than you.

If you hitch your value/worth to your ego, you will always be let down.

Never get discouraged: There is always time for another try.

We are never done learning. There's always something else to learn.

As it is with chess, so it is with astral projection, except you're only playing against yourself. Astral projection is a skill, much like any sport.

Don't be afraid of obstacles. Face them and overcome them.

Never stop practicing and never stop improving your skills.

You've only failed if you've given up, so never give up.

Learn from multiple people who have experiences, not people with book-knowledge, and not just one person.

Most importantly, try different strategies: many may fail but some of them might lead to success.

Don't judge yourself by your success or failure. Just work toward your goals.

The amount of effort you put into it will determine how much you get out of it.

And as it is with astral projection, so it is with life, too. Every one of the bullets above apply equally to anything in life.

It's all a journey and a game. We all learn and we all teach. We're just walking each other home.

Bob Peterson,
20 June 2023

Green

Today I'm reviewing the book Astral Projection (Extended Edition) by Marius K. Green. The subtitle is: The Supreme Guide to Travel in Unknown Worlds and Contact Your Missing Loved Ones. That's a mouthful!

It's been a long time since I read an astral projection book and did a book review. Sorry! I guess I've had other priorities in life. Part of the problem is that the book was tedious--hard, even painful--to read, at least at first.

In fact, if you had asked me to rate this book while I was reading the first half of the book, I would have said that this is the worst astral projection book I have ever read. But then it got better. The second half is better than the first.

As usual, I'll start out with the negative and list the problems so I can end on a good note.

Some of the bad points:

The pages have no page numbers, so I can't even tell you where to find quotes! The best I can do is tell you what chapter it's in. Unprofessional. Did I mention that this is "The Extended Edition" which means nobody caught the omission on the earlier edition?

There are incomplete sentences that just end unexpectedly.

He makes some dubious claims like "the astral body can be released and set off on a long journey, moving at the speed that is less than only the speed of light waves". (chapter 2)

He uses strange and unfamiliar terms compared to other books in the literature. For example, he refers to the astral body as "the ghost." He refers to sleep paralysis as "astral catalepsy" like some of the very oldest books on the subject.

He doesn't reference any contemporary books on the subject. He only quotes very old sources like Hereward Carrington, Oliver Lodge, Charles Lancelin, Sylvan Muldoon, and such.

His sources are not listed in any detail, so the reader is left wondering if he/she should take the author's word for it, try to find the actual reference, or just write it off. And I'm not a man who takes authors at their word.

He talks about two astral projections he had a very looooong time ago. One, he says, took place in the "summer of 1924". That's 99 years ago! His photo in the back of the book is in color and makes him look about 30 years old. The other took place "in the summer of 1916" which is 107 years ago! So something definitely doesn't add up. Maybe he was quoting from one of those old books, but didn't say so? Or did I miss-read it?

A big part of the problem was just the author's wording. I felt like I was reading a computer-generated translation from a book that was originally written in French. Why French? Well, the author's name is Marius and as an ignorant American, the only other time I've encountered that name was from Les Miserables (Have a listen to "A Heart Full of Love"), a play about the French Revolution. Plus he references the French author Charles Lancelin. Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions.

At least in the beginning the book uses all kinds of weird phrases, even wrong words. For example:

"That what you met, following the laws of art that will be stated, may not coincide in some respects with what I tell, and about which art is acquired by practice." (Chapter 2)

Huh? Here's another example:

"This is always the way that the ghost moves when exteriorization occurs, and the body is in a horizontal position. The whole process could happen stray or slow." (Chapter 4)

Another example:

"When this happens, the physical body always experiences a concussion, sometimes accompanied by pain, or as I called it, "splitting in two." This is also called "bestowal" (repercussion.)" (Chapter 4)

I don't think he really meant concussion (head injury); he meant repercussion. In
the heading that precedes this, he refers to it as "Rapercursion" which
is just...bad.

Another example:

"Whenever I saw a dream, I was attracted by some terrible ghostly object, similar to the Buddha." (Chapter 5)

I can't even imagine a sentence in which "Buddha" can be described as both terrible and ghostly.

In chapter 6 he even describes sleep paralysis (a normal function of the sleeping physical body) as "epilepsy" (an electrical storm inside the brain). Yikes!

He calls flying dreams "flying sleep." He calls falling dreams "dreams of the fall." and his pronouns are often mixed up, sometimes using "it" to refer to a person, or "he" or "she" to refer to a thing. (This trait is common to European languages.)

Green says a few things that differ from my personal experience. For example, he writes:

"In the dreams of the fall [falling dreams], we always wake up before we reach the earth." (Chapter five).

I hate to break it to you, but that's not true at all. I've had dreams in which I not only hit the Earth, but was violently smashed several feet into the ground, and died from the fall! And the current book I'm reading [to be named later] contains another fine example dream.

Green references the work of a few other authors, but he doesn't cite references, so I have no idea how to do further research, and he often misspells the authors' names. For example, several times he references the work of:

Dr. Lindler regarding the composition of the astral body.

Hereward Carrington, but he calls him "X. Carrington."

He references experiments done by "Dr. Van Letem" but cites no references, so how can I give it any weight?

He references "Dr. Van Idey" and "Dr. Van Eden" but maybe he meant Dr. Frederik van Eeden? Possibly the same person as the previous bullet?

He references the famous spirit medium Eusapia Paladino as "Evzapia Paladino."

He references "Mr. Gurney," as one of the authors of "Ghosts of the Living." Um. That's "Phantasms of the Living" by Gurney, Myers and Podmore.

He also uses very dubious "pseudo-science." For example:

"Radiated in this way, their strength can be measured by means of specially designed instruments - a biometer, tonometer, and so on. Some devices of this kind were invented by French experimenters. These devices show that repulsive force is emitted from one side of the body, and gravity from the other." (Chapter 7)

He also talks about "ether" as being a fundamental particle of science, which is like 100-year-old pseudo-science. He also talks about the "weight of the soul," which, as far as I know, was debunked fifty or more years ago.

He also makes very dubious medical claims. For example:

"The body has four large nerve, or psychic centers--four brains, as they are sometimes called (brain, cerebellum, medulla oblongata and solar plexus.)" (Chapter 8)

This is not science; this is nonsense. Even if you give him the benefit of the doubt and suppose he's talking about chakras, it still contradicts conventional thinking.

Now for some of the good points:

The book is based on the author's personal experience, which many
authors cannot claim. In fact, he says "...the author is well acquainted
with this phenomenon, having made hundreds of projections of a period
of 12 years..." (chapter 1).

To back that up, he has several OBE narratives, and they sound pretty convincing to me. You know how much I love OBE narratives.

Green has some interesting points about astral projection. For example, bucking conventional wisdom, he says:

"So, if you think that for astral projection, it is necessary that the mind remains calm, then you are mistaken." (Chapter 10)

(I, for one, do need to remain calm). And yet later he stresses the need for complete "passivity"--Something which I've insisted on since my very first book.

"Everything that stimulates you - alcohol, drugs, or food, is negative factor because it prevents the achievement of a passive state." (Chapter 10)

Calm and passive is what works for me. But, to get nit-picky, alcohol is a depressant, not a stimulant.

Interestingly Green also recommends using as light blanket as possible, stating that "excessive weight on the body creates a special physiological effect." Although I remember another author insisted just the opposite, citing that heavy blankets are preferred because they make you slightly uncomfortable and hot. I've always preferred sleeping atop the blankets if I can.

Green insists that his astral projections correlate to a slow heart rate. In fact, he recommends trying to slow down your heart rate to induce OBEs. He said he has a naturally slow heart rate, so slow that his doctors put him on a medicine that increased his heart rate, and his out-of-body experiences completely went away for weeks. As soon as he stopped taking the medicine, he started having OBEs again. (Chapter 10). He estimates his ideal heart rate is 42 beats per minute.

He also ties many of his astral projections to fear: he had more OBEs when he was afraid of them, and as he became more comfortable, they slowed down. He was able to overcome that factor by using extreme desire, which brought them back. (Chapter 11).

He discusses some of his experiments. For example, several times he tried Sylvan Muldoon's "Thirst" technique and was successful. He's the only author I know of, besides Muldoon himself, to have actually used it successfully, and several times.

In another series of experiments, he projected several miles away to his girlfriend's bedroom to try to make his presence known to her. He got there several times, but she never saw him. Then, when he stopped trying, he dreamed that he visited her, and this time she actually saw his ghostly form. I had to laugh because this exactly mirrors some of my own experiments!

Green tried several times to affect the physical world, like trying to knock things off a shelf, but he was never successful. He became extremely frustrated by this fact, maybe even a little sorrowful, and described how joyful it was to rejoin his physical body and regain its ability to affect physical things.

There aren't really any astral projection techniques in the book, but there are hints. He talks about how he had the most astral projections when he slept for 6 hours, stayed awake for 15 minutes, then went back to bed, setting a strong intention. This is, of course, the now famous "WBTB" (Wake Back To Bed) technique, but he seems to have stumbled on it by accident. He made no references to WBTB.

He also talks a lot about developing "passive will" and influencing the "crypto-conscious mind" which apparently is halfway between the conscious and subconscious mind. It's an interesting discussion, and he spends some time on it. In fact, he states:

"I say without hesitation that the role of the passive will in the projection of the astral body is one of the great secrets. You can call it the method of simple imagination, but this is not entirely accurate. Rather, it is imagination plus a will, fulfilling the desires of the imagination. In this case, the passive will can never be used by force because it will turn into an active will. You just have to have a strong desire to project." (Chapter 11)

Yes, I agree with that.

Oh, and he makes a clear distinction between lucid dreams and astral projection.

So what are we to make of this book? There's definitely a cultural gap here, with Green talking about drinking water from a stream and visiting "nearby villages," but he also writes about power lines. There's a time gap, with references to experiences that happened a hundred years ago, and books from a hundred years ago, with absolutely no modern references. It made me wonder: Was most of the material written by his grandfather? His descriptions of the non-physical sure seemed genuine enough. He even honestly admits he never went to "higher planes" and was always stuck in the "lower astral" or the echo of the physical world.

I didn't count the number of pages, but I'm guessing about 120, with decent (but slightly large) font and margins, so you're not cheated on the amount of content.

In my opinion, there's nothing "supreme" about this book, nor does the author explain how
to contact dead loved ones, as advertised in the book's title. One thing's for sure: Things don't quite add up. And because of that, I'll only give the book 2 stars out of 5. I've read worse books, but you can find better.

Bob Peterson
06 June 2023

----------------------------
It usually doesn't bring me back to full-body awareness; it's just an instant relocation. In the past I've described this as like "Paddle Ball". You know, a paddle with a ball attached by an elastic string, and your goal is to hit the ball with the paddle and the ball invariably snaps back to the paddle. Yeah, pretty lame.

So how do you solve it?

Persistence is the key

Like all things astral, the key is persistence. It's normal and natural for your focus to temporarily snap back to the body, but if you persist in your efforts and try again you will make progress toward your goal. I've had many out-of-body experiences in which I make an exit but get snapped back inside within three feet (1 meter). I refocus, exit again, and get snapped back inside again, but this time I get maybe six feet (two meters). If you keep doing this you can make slow but steady progress. Eventually you'll get beyond the "cord activity range" where you'll have more freedom of movement and will be less likely to get sucked back inside.

Using this technique, I've had three-hour OBEs that were broken into lots of smaller five-to-fifteen minute segments. The down side, of course, is that it's really hard to remember what transpired during those segments. But that's another topic for another day.

The Solution

So if you get sucked back inside your body after a few seconds, my best advice is:

Ignore it and immediately exit again.

When you get back to your body, do NOT move your physical body.

Instead, focus on the space in front of you and, if you can, develop a sense of motion and momentum to push back out of your body again.

Do NOT think about your body at all. Casual thoughts like "I wonder if my body is alright" or "I wonder if I've been away from the body too long" can instantly send you careening back to the body again.

Just forget about your physical body and focus on the non-physical task at hand. Stay in the present moment.

Be persistent. If you get sucked back inside your body 37 times, exit 38 times.

If you "reintegrate" with your body and can't easily exit again, don't move your physical body, but focus on inducing the vibrations again.

Out-of-body experiences can seem like a game of cat and mouse. You constantly chase it and it constantly gets away. But just like physical life, you need to be tenacious and never give up on your goals.

The Universe (with a capital U) often throws up roadblocks to our goals, but overcoming those roadblocks makes you stronger and helps you develop your skills.
Bob Peterson,
23 May 2023
(You can read that article here.) Needless to say, it is now badly out of date.

In that time many groups have come and gone. Others have been renamed or changed focus. Believe it or not, some groups even kicked me out or scolded me for posting links to my blog! This, despite the fact that all I've been doing is offering free astral projection information, techniques, and advice for the last ten years. Anyone who spends five minutes to research me and my work can figure that out. I don't value any group whose moderators are so closed-minded they can't be bothered to research me or my work. Their loss.

Without further ado, here is my updated list of the biggest Astral Projection groups on Facebook for 2023:

Astral Projection - 76000 members, up from 66400

Astral Projection - Techniques - 60600 members, up from 18000

Astral Projection Lessons - 58600 members, up from 47000

Astral Projection Community - 32000 members, up from 31900

The Out-of-Body Travel Foundation! - 17200 members, up from 16000

Astral Projection&Lucid Dreams Teachings And Other Psychic Abilities - 12600 members

Astral Traveling & Spiritual Awakening - 10500 members

Astral Projection and Psychic Experience - 8200 members, down from 8600

Journey To The Astral World - 7700 members, up from 7000

ASTRAL PROJECTION - 7500 members, up from 7000

Astral Projection Help And Tips - 6500 members, up from 3300

Out of Body Explorers - 6300 members

TMI Out of Body Experience Group - 6200 members

CONSCIOUS EXPLORERS - 5500 members

Astral Projection & Lucid Dreaming group - 5000 members, up from 4500

Astral Projection (Out of Body Experiences) - 5000 members

Astral Projection-OOBE-Lucid Dreaming - 4700 members

Out of Body Experience & Near Death Experience - 4600 members

Sleep Paralysis and Astral Travel - 4300 members, up from 2900

Astral projection travelers, experienced and learning. - 4300 members

William Buhlman Group - 3300 members, up from 2100

There are many other groups with fancy names, but I chose to post the groups with the most members because those tend to be the most active and vibrant.

All these groups are excellent resources for people interested in astral projection.

Congratulations to rising star "Astral Projection - Techniques," for outstanding growth that rocketed them to the #2 position. You seem trapped, can't leave your bedroom, unable to push through doors, windows or walls, or you can't seem to reach a friend.

Understanding the problem

Experienced astral travelers agree: barriers like this are almost always psychological: your progress is blocked by
limiting beliefs, fears, or doubts,
whether conscious or subconscious. For example, subconscious fears--fears you may not even know you have--can hold you back because of the mysterious unknown: Who knows what's out there? It's a defense mechanism to keep you safe.

To get around these problems, apply a bit of psychology. Here are some possible solutions:

Solution 1 - Try all your options

Sometimes you can't push through a door because, in some deep part of your psyche, you think it might be impossible. After all, you can't do it when you're physical. To your psyche, a closed door may imply a barrier you should not cross. But since you've never pushed through a wall while physical, you may not have that bias.

So if you can't get through a door, try walking through a nearby wall. If you can't get through the wall, try a nearby window. Don't give up until you've tried all three.

Even if you can't push through a door, you can try to open it. Many people find that, although they can't really open the door, they seem to pass right through as soon as they try.

Solution 2 - Leave your astral body

In my previous article (#8 above) I offered this as a solution to astral blindness, but it also works for getting stuck and being unable to leave your immediate surroundings. For the same reasons, I might add. So close your (astral) eyes and use your imagination to try to separate your conscious awareness from your non-physical (etheric?) body into a second non-physical (astral?) body.

Solution 3 - Raise your vibrations

I talked about this, too, in the previous article. Sometimes you can't get through a window, wall, or door because your conscious awareness is vibrating at too low a rate; the same reason that may make you blind during an OBE. Occultists would say your vibrations are too slow and "physical," and collide with the vibrations of the counterpart of the physical walls, doors, windows.

To counter this, try raise your vibrations. Close your eyes and imagine your conscious awareness is vibrating at a given rate, then imagine the vibration gets higher and higher, like turning up a dial. Or perhaps like a musical note that gets higher and higher in pitch. It might help to imagine peace, tranquility, or heaven or other happy thoughts. Or recall a song that really puts you in a good mood.

Solution 4 - Back your way through barriers

Another time-tested trick is to turn around and face away from the barrier (wall, door, window, etc.), then take a step backwards, backing up through the barrier rather than going through it forwards. This is simple, but effective.

Solution 5 - Freedom Now!

Another solution is to strongly insist, demand, or even scream and shout out that you are completely free from obstruction. Yelling "Freedom Now!" can unlock subconscious barriers and set you free. Willpower can overpower even stubborn psychological limitations.

Solution 6 - Think of a place and pull yourself there

I described this technique in a blog article from 2013 called Controlling Your Reality in an OBE. Basically, you think of a far-away place, set a mental anchor there, and pull yourself to the anchor. It's more about intent than actual movement.

Solution 7 - Ask helpers to take you some where

In my experience, there are helpers "out there" during my OBEs who are willing to help, even if you don't see them. In fact, I usually don't see them, but I can talk to them and hear them normally. They never interfere unless you ask them for help. But if you ask for help, they're usually very cooperative and willing to help.

So if you're having trouble, try asking (aloud) for help. Just say (aloud, in the OBE) "Can I please get some help traveling to X?"

Conclusions

Sometimes we stand in our own way and block our own progress. Doubts, fears and limiting beliefs hold us back. That's true in the physical as well as non-physical environments. The best way around them is often to discover and resolve the limiting beliefs that hold you back. That's best done before you go out-of-body.

But once you're in the OBE, use psychology devices like the solutions above. These can get you past the blockage, which, in turn, helps you resolve those limiting beliefs and fears.

It's a spiraling cycle: limiting beliefs keep you inside, but the more you struggle, the more those beliefs are reinforced.

Instead, use these simple tricks to your advantage, and your newfound freedom will break the cycle of "stuck" and prove that you are, in fact, free to go wherever you want. As they said in the Wizard of Oz, you had the power all along.

Bob Peterson,
18 April 2023

Visual data from the eyes gets routed through the lens to the retina, along the optic nerve to the visual cortex at the back of the brain. From there impulses are sent to different processing centers of the brain where we interpret the image in several different ways (threat assessment, facial recognition, pattern recognition, memory processing, etc.). This interpretation is we call "sight."

In fact, the lenses in our eyes present the light onto our retina upside down, but your brain turns it "right side up" for your interpretation. Scientists actually conducted experiments where they gave people special glasses that flipped what they saw to be "right-side-up" on the retina. At first, the people couldn't function at all with the world seemingly upside-down. But after a while, their brains learned to adjust and then they could "see" the world normally again. But here's the weird part: When they removed the special glasses, the world looked upside-down again, until their brains readjusted back to normal.

In an out-of-body experience you don't really have "astral" eyes, retinas, optic nerves, or an astral brain. All you have is a similar interpretation, but of mysterious non-physical data. Our non-physical body schema is really just a framework we use to interpret that data. In fact, the "astral" body can take any shape, such as a sphere, a pinpoint of light, a bird, or a human body. We normally assume human form out of habit because we've been using it so long to interpret sense data.

In fact, you don't really have astral senses of sight, hearing, touch, or any of it. All you have is interpretations of all these non-physical perceptions.

The same can be said for dream senses: When we "see" something in a
dream, we are really just experiencing hallucinated inner events, and interpreting that data as sight, sound, touch, and so forth.

My point is simply this: if you don't "see" during an OBE it's not really something to be too concerned about. I've found myself blind in countless OBEs where I just ignored it, walked away from my body and focused on other things, like plotting a course of action, etc., and a few seconds later, without even trying, I realize that I had started to "see" without even trying. My sense of sight somehow just naturally kicked in without effort, and I hadn't really even noticed it.

Different types of non-physical sight

In my first book, chapter 18 (which you can read here) I described four basic types of non-physical sight:

Astral sight - This feels closest to "physical sight" everyone wants to have.

Astral mind sensing - This is more like sensing everything around you in all directions at the same time. It's almost like touching the entire room, and everything in it, all at once.

Body sight - This is where you try to open your non-physical eyes, but instead your physical body's eyes open and you see, for example, your ceiling, but often blurry.

Clairvoyance - This is what people today would call "Remote Viewing", where you receive visual impressions of things, both near and far. Long ago, they used to call it "traveling clairvoyance." Most people don't stop to consider that if you can do it from the in-the-body state, you can also do it while out-of-body.

So when I say I'm "blind" I really mean that I want (or expect) to have the first type, astral sight, but I have one of the other types instead, or none at all. And that's annoying because it's hard to describe what you "saw" in your OBE unless it's that first type. So what can you do about it?

Solutions

Here are some ideas to get you unstuck.

Solution 1 - Get farther away from your physical body

Author and experienced astral traveler Sylvan Muldoon wrote that the physical body has a "cord activity range" that not only pulls you prematurely back to your body, but also interferes with your sense of sight. He estimated it to be 15 feet/5 meters, but some authors say it's more like 10. I've also found this to be true, so I always recommended follow these steps:

Close your (astral) eyes.

Put some distance (15 feet/5 meters) between you and your physical body.

Make an effort to open your (astral) eyes. This is just like opening your physical eyes.

In my experience this is usually enough to restore good eyesight.

Solution 2 - Clarity now!

William Buhlman, author of several books on the subject, suggests you demand “Clarity Now!” to engage your sense of sight. Other suggest you even scream it at the top of your lungs. And it often does bring clarity.

Solution 3 - Engage your analytical mind

I've had OBEs in which my "sight" didn't operate properly until I engaged my analytical mind. I could "see" objects in my bedroom but my vision was extremely limited and I couldn't correctly identify or interpret them. So I started doing math problems in my mind to engage my analytical mind. I started doing simple math problems in my head. Something like this: "1024 plus 768 is, let's see, working from the right to the left, 8+4, is 12, 2+6 is 8, but carry the 10, so 92, and 10+7 is 17. So the answer is 1792." As I did this, all the objects in my bedroom came into sharp focus and I could "see" everything normally.

Solution 4 - Leave your astral body

Try to leave your astral body. Seriously. Like I said before, our non-physical body schema is really just a framework, and if that form is limiting, leave it behind. How do you do that? Just try to escape your astral body like you did your physical; walk away from it or visualize your spirit leaving the astral body, rising up, etc.

The result is that you'll usually find yourself in a different "astral body," one that can see more clearly.

Solution 5 - Raise your vibrations

Occultists of old would probably say that you cannot see because your awareness was associated with a dense a non-physical body, like the "etheric body," or the "lower astral." So you can either leave that "etheric body" and take control of the finer "astral" body, or else just focus on raising your vibrations to a higher level, and hopefully your sense of sight will snap into place.

Solution 6 - Leave "The Void"

Some seasoned out-of-body experiencers describe a place called "The Void" that's a jumping-off point for non-physical excursions. Fred Aardema comes to mind. In "The Void" all you see is blackness. It's like you're in outer space, but no stars or planets are visible.

I firmly believe that many people misinterpret "The Void" as blindness because you can't see anything. Look down at your non-physical hands. Can you see them or are they invisible too? (I've had OBEs in which I could, OBEs in which I couldn't, and still others where I could see them as filmy and translucent).

Either way, refocus your awareness to someplace more familiar, but not in your bedroom or wherever your body resides. In fact, it's usually better to focus on an area outside your house or apartment. Refocus to the roof of your house, out in the street, a garden, a park or wherever you want. Once refocused, your sense of sight is usually restored.

Conclusions

Non-physical senses can be confusing; especially the sense of sight. Hopefully these tricks can help you get unstuck. So go out and see the sights, and write down what you "saw" in your OBE journal.

Bob Peterson,
04 April 2023
It feels like all that time is wasted.

So how can you make your out-of-body experiences last longer? Here are some tips and tricks you can use:

The Problem

To induce an OBE you need to disengage or disconnect from your physical senses (through relaxation and sensory deprivation), and guide yourself into what I call an alternate "Story of Experience." Basically you use imaginary sense data to trick your brain into "derailing" your normal sense-based in-the-body story of experience. Once derailed, you let go of the imaginary sense data and automatically transition to a story of experience based on non-physical data.

The problem with too-short OBEs is that the brain sometimes puts itself back on the rails by reconnecting with the body's five senses to return to that story of experience.

The solution is to keep it distracted from the physical senses.

Engage your non-physical senses

Touch things
To make your OBEs last longer, first, make a habit of touching things. Touch the walls. Touch the ceiling. Touch the lamps or whatever else you see. It doesn't matter what you touch, just that you touch things. Author Michael Raduga calls this Palpation. Examine things with your sense of touch.

Rub your non-physical hands together
If there's nothing close by, try rubbing your hands together and feel that sense of friction between them.

Touch your arms or face
Your physical hands have a large number of nerves dedicated to the sense of touch, and so does your face. So squeeze your non-physical arms with your non-physical hands. Examine how they feel in your hands.

Peering into things
Again, I'm borrowing this term from Michael Raduga again. Engage your non-physical sense of sight by examining something closely. Look at your hands and try to see every hair and joint, and look at the color of the skin. Look at the walls and try to see every fine blemish or bump in the paint or wall. But be careful:

Keep your eyes closed at first
If you're too close to your physical body, trying to open your eyes can sometimes cause your physical body's eyes to open. If you can maintain focus there may not be a problem. But if your focus is weak, your sense of physical sight can re-engage and send you back to your physical body. So it's always best to keep your eyes closed until you're at least 15 feet/5 meters away from your body, then open them. Sometimes it's not a problem especially if you start seeing with your non-physical eyes (through your closed eyelids) before you even leave your body. But it's a trap you should avoid if possible.

Direct your internal monologue

I believe your "story of experience" is directly related to an area of the physical brain called the right temporo-parietal junction (or rTPJ) which compiles the sense data and formulates your idea of what's currently happening to you. That's the thing we're trying to "derail."

The left side of the brain has a corresponding area (the left temporo-parietal junction or lTPJ) that resides in an area of the brain that's responsible for language. Among other things, I believe the lTPJ is responsible for your "inner monologue," the ongoing story or narrative you tell yourself about your experience. This is basically the language-version interpretation of your current "story of experience." Let's just call this your "monologue of experience."

The important thing to remember is: these areas of the brain talk to each other. Your interpretation of what's happening to you is based on both your rTPJ's "story of experience" and your lTPJ's "monologue of experience." And each affects the other.

One of the most important concepts I got from Carlos Castaneda's books is his suggestion to "Stop the inner dialogue" (I would say monologue) as both a meditation technique and to basically make magical things happen in your life.

Affirmations are a way to change your inner monologue to fit a desired outcome. Author Jane Roberts/"Seth" might suggest you simply alter your inner monologue to make changes in your life. For example, losing money at a casino (as a rTPJ story of experience) can turn your inner monologue (lTPJ) negative: "I never win." But changing your inner monologue to be more positive ("I win.") can also alter your experience and help you actually change your reality to be more positive.

So during your OBE, occasionally inwardly remind yourself, "Wow, this is really happening. I'm really out of my body," and so forth.

Curb your emotions

Nothing can end an out-of-body experience more quickly than getting too emotional and letting your emotions run amok. If you get too happy or too excited, or even too scared, your OBE can end in a heartbeat. I've found it's always best to try to be a dispassionate observer: Just experience it and watch what happens with emotionless curiosity. Tell yourself you'll have time after the OBE to get excited.

Curb your fantasy

In the past I've cautioned against playing "what if" in the non-physical world. The slightest fantasy can send you back to the sleeping state and you'll start an ordinary dream. In my first book I called this the "Fantasy Trap." So during an OBE, avoid all hypotheticals and stick to what you see, hear, and feel.

Ignore Your Physical Body

Whatever you do, don't think about your physical body. Stray thoughts like "Gee, I've been out a long time...I wonder if my body is still alright" can send you careening back to your body instantly. So train yourself to focus on what you can see, and try not to think about your physical body.

Reset, reboot and retry

I've been a computer analyst and programmer my whole life, and in computers there's an old saying: If it doesn't work, reset, reboot, and retry. Sometimes computers run out of memory or other limitations, and they need to be rebooted before they'll cooperate. (They've gotten much better over the years). This saying can also apply to OBEs. Sometimes you may need a lot of tenacity and patience.

So if you get sent back to your physical body prematurely, don't move and just re-engage the same imaginary sights or sounds that got you into the OBE state before you got kicked out. Sometimes this can seem like a fight: You induce an OBE, step three steps and get sucked back in, but instead of giving up in disgust, you don't move and try the technique again, induce another OBE, step five steps, and get sucked back in again. This can go on for several iterations before you get far enough away from your body to have something significant happen. So be persistent and keep trying until you make significant progress.

Bob Peterson,
21 February 2022

It's not because I ran out of books to read. It's because I've been focused on other things. Part of the problem is that this book was difficult to read, and I mean that in the literal sense. The contents were good, but the font/typeset was so small I had to wear reading glasses (aka "peepers" or "cheaters") in order to read it. It was micro-font.

The book was 174 pages long, and each page was on thick, high quality paper. But if it was a normal font, it might have been 250 pages. So I was struggling to read every page, and therefore reluctant to go back to it; I'd put it down and not pick it up again for weeks.

I know I've said this in many other book reviews, but here it comes again: this book is fascinating and different from all the rest. If I had to sum it up in one sentence, I'd describe the book as "A philosopher's struggle to find life's meaning in the light of his OBEs."

The author, Jim Willis, is a good writer; he's authored 11 books, so he has great grammar, spelling, organization, and thoughtfulness. He doesn't waste your time.

Willis comes from a Christian background. Before he retired he was an ordained Christian Minister for more than 40 years. He wrote sermons and shouted the messages of Christianity at a pulpit in front of congregations of church-goers. And then, in 2013 or so, he started having out-of-body experiences, and needless to say, it caused him to do a lot of soul-searching, and his soul-searching is reflected heavily in this book. In a good way. OBEs are where the spiritual rubber hits the spiritual road! And that fascinates me. For example, he writes:

"If an argument about the existence of God hinges on proof texts selected from a Bible that is said to be without error, then all someone has to do is show that the Bible contains some discrepancies and the argument is over. God simply ceases to exist. In other words, I wasn't preaching about God anymore. I was preaching about an inerrant, infallible Bible. In my theology, the Bible had taken the place of God." (pg. 50)

He's one of the first Christians I've ever read who pointed out a discrepancy in the Bible, one I had never heard before (and I've heard many):

"And language changes and cultures evolve. I find it fascinating, for instance, that the opening chapters of Genesis, the first book of the Bible, describes paradise as a forest-like garden of Eden. Sixty-six books later, in Revelation, the Bible's final book, paradise is described as a magnificent city." (pg. 133)

Rather than interpret OBEs through Christian-colored glasses, he started doing research, some of which was science-oriented, but much of which was in other spiritual traditions. So yes, there are a few quotes from the Bible in this book, but Willis also talks open-mindedly about Buddhism, Shamanism, and other spiritual traditions. He talks about spirit guides, past lives, and other "new age" beliefs. He also cites Robert Monroe and William Buhlman. I've got to admire a Christian who is as open-minded as Willis. So many religious believers, especially Christians, are not. I applaud Willis for being open-minded and doing the hard work.

Willis is level-headed. For example, he's quick to point out that:

"If OBEs constitute a scientific event as well as a metaphysical phenomenon, they will stand up to scrutiny. Indeed, they must stand up to scrutiny or they are not worthy of our study." (pg. 36)

He goes on to cite various scientific research and fundamentals of quantum physics, referencing, for example, one of my favorite non-OBE authors, Dr. Dean Radin, chief scientist at the Institute of Noetic Science (IONs). (If you haven't read Radin's book Entangled Minds, you definitely should!)

In many of my book reviews, I complain that there are not enough OBE narratives, so readers have no idea the author's level of experience: Are they nut jobs (or "nutter" as they say in the UK), an inexperienced "book-knowledge-only" author, or have they actually been there? Thankfully, Willis has ample OBE narratives and explains exactly what his OBEs are like. Thank you, Jim Willis.

For example, he gives an OBE narrative from August 11, 2014, in which he finds himself on Martha's Vineyard trying to talk to the President of the United States (at the time, Obama). In another narrative, he describes flying directly into the Sun to "burn away all my impurities" He not only made it, he "enjoyed every second of it."

His narratives clearly point out that, like me, he's met various spirits and even the "invisible helpers" I wrote about. He even struggles with what to call them because nomenclature can be brutal to Christians: One person's "Angel" is another person's "Spirit" or another's "Higher Self." Choose your words carefully because each term is "loaded" with positive and negative connotations for the believer!

"Unseen angels," the Bible calls them in the book of Hebrews. The "Spirit Guides" of shamanic traditions. Our 'Higher Self.'" (pg. 61)

I can really relate to Willis because in some ways we're a lot alike. We're both old guys. Like me, he lives (or lived) on a properly in the middle of the woods, embracing nature. Like me, he questions everything, including our perceptions. Many years ago I wrote an article that compared OBEs to NASA: Why are most ordinary people convinced that the planet Mars is real? They've never been there (in-the-body that is!), so all they've got to base their beliefs on is anecdotal evidence: photographs and videos, all of which could easily be faked. Willis makes a similar analogy, except with England, since he'd never been there.

Near his home is a "Medicine Wheel" that he thinks might have been a sacred place for Native Americans who once lived there, and possibly a "vortex." Many of his OBE narratives involve traveling to the medicine wheel and witnessing rites, ceremonies, and spiritual lessons there.

I was pleasantly surprised when one of his narratives described beings I've seen myself. Here is his description:

"There I met someone, or something, that is very difficult to describe. It's not a 'being,' as such. It's more like a pillar, or tube, of light. It seems bright and, in contrast, I seem dark. (I guess anything would appear dark next to that light.)" (pg. 97)

In the past I've described them (verbally) to friends as looking like a giant, human-sized Coleman Lantern filaments floating a couple feet in the air. And I believe these beings are the basis for descriptions of "Angels" in the Bible.

Any self-respecting fundamentalist Christian would say "See? See? Being of
Light? That's how the Bible describes Lucifer!" And yet, in my
experience, these "angels" go out of their way to help people and perform sacred
missions, often with unconscious and unaware astral travelers in tow to
use as unwary tools of their trade. But I digress; that's a different topic for a different day.

I was disappointed that Willis never addressed "The Elephant in the Room," and that is: Why do many (at least fundamentalist) Christians think out-of-body travel is a trick of the Devil, evil, or even "Witchcraft," which is forbidden in the Bible?

Or the other, even bigger Elephant in the room: Willis talks about meeting and interacting with various spirit guides and spirits, even giving them names, like his spirit guide, Sobuko. But the Bible strictly forbids consorting and talking to spirits. How does he reconcile that?
This is definitely an excellent book if you want philosophy and conjecture with regard to out-of-body experiences. It's a search for meaning and answers. It's brutally honest and dripping with self-doubt. He asks all the right questions, and he treats opposing views fairly. And he comes up with excellent conclusions. For example:

"You inhabit all realities. It's only your five sense that create the illusion that this one is all there is." (pg. 91)

Then he argues his point by citing various theories of quantum physics, such as that we may be creating our reality simply by choosing from probable outcomes and collapsing the wave-forms by observing them. But how does that lead you to Ultimate Meaning, to "God"? That's a difficult question to answer. But he struggles to do so.

If you're looking for OBE techniques or tips, this book is not for you. There are no exit techniques in there. Well, he almost does. Willis offers some practical advice and breaks it down into several pages of instructions, which he summarizes as:

Make the Decision

Stick to it (Don't give up!)

Develop a System

Focus, Focus, Focus!

Stay Calm

Keep a Journal

He also suggests:

Learn to find stillness: Stillness of heart, stillness of mind, stillness of body.

Learn to staying grounded

Try to slow down your heartbeat.

He's also quick to point out that he's not always successful in getting out-of-body. He writes:

"I fail to still my mind as often as I succeed. Maybe even more often. It's a constant struggle." (pg. 125)

I feel your pain, Jim!

You may be wondering: What does all this have to do with the quantum akashic field? Not much. Aside from a few small attempts to relate OBEs to quantum physics, there's really very little in the book about the "Akashic Library" or quantum mechanics. I'm not sure why so many authors try to relate OBEs to quantum physics: both William Buhlman and Michael Raduga did it, but neither did it justice. If you want a good discussion of how all this relates to quantum physics, go back to Dean Radin's book "Entangled Minds" which I mentioned earlier.

I enjoyed this book a lot and give it 4 stars out of 5. It's more philosophy and conjecture than I wanted, too light on techniques, but worth the money.

Bob Peterson
21 February 2023

----------------------------
this article I'd like to focus on a problem many have faced: You exit your body, but you find yourself tightly glued to it, stuck in sleep paralysis, and unable to go anywhere.

I first wrote about this problem twenty-one years ago in this article.

The secret lies primarily in knowing what’s really happening.

In the sleep paralysis state your consciousness seems to be focused, not in your astral body, but in your "energy body," also known as the "etheric body." Since the energy body is closely associated with your physical body, you won't be able to dislodge it or get it more than a few inches/centimeters away from the physical body. That can’t happen until you’re dead, or close to it.

There are exceptions to the rule: "physical mediums" or "spirit mediums" seem to be able to remove their etheric body from the physical. You may also be able to dislodge it temporarily if you're sick or injured, but for most normal people, there's just no way.

The secret is, you need to transfer your consciousness from your energy or etheric body to your astral body.

After a lot of experimentation, I found a way.

Close your eyes and keep them closed.

Push forward with your consciousness and imagine your consciousness is moving forward. Even though you may not feel any movement, your consciousness will move forward in your astral body. If you doubt that it is working and open your eyes prematurely, your awareness will zip like a ball on a rubber band back into your energy body. So keep your eyes shut and have faith that your consciousness is moving forward.

Keep pushing forward with your consciousness as hard as you can, just like walking underwater, until you are about fifteen feet (five meters) away from your physical body. Of course, since your eyes are closed, you can only guess (or approximate) how far this is, so don’t obsess on the distance. Just take a best guess.

Once you are safely fifteen feet/five meters away from your body, open your (non-physical) eyes again, and you will be in your astral body and free to roam.

In his book The Vibrational State, author Maverick Vardøger
described a similar technique he calls "Breaking the Glue" in which
you close your eyes and sit up and pry yourself free with a great deal of force coupled with imagination.

You are now free to move about the cabin. Enjoy the ride!
Bob Peterson,
07 February 2022
this article I'd like to focus on another common problem: You can't seem to get the vibrations no matter how hard you try.

First of all, let me just say the vibrations are different for everyone, and they can even vary from instance to instance. To some people they feel like touching a live electric wire: disrupting, electrical and almost painful. Other people feel them as a loud, roaring, rushing or hissing noise. Some even find them stimulating, soothing, arousing or even orgasmic. The important thing is: some people don't feel them at all; they are completely undetectable. That means you may experience the vibrations and not even know it.

The flip side of that coin is: the vibrations may not even be needed to leave your body. Many people leave their body without getting the vibrations at all, or at least they haven't noticed them.

When I first started having OBEs in the early 1980s, the vibrations felt rough and electrical, but as time went on they got smoother, almost nonexistent. Still, after all these years I get the full-intensity vibrations every once in a while (like every couple years) and it surprises me.

So if you can't get the vibrations, don't sweat it. It means very little.

I suspect maybe the vibrations are a physical-body phenomenon, similar to a mild seizure, or maybe the brain's interpretation of when it's flooded with sleep paralysis hormones. And maybe we only notice it if we have full-body awareness when we exit the body rather than becoming conscious after we exit.

At any rate, here are some ideas to help you get the vibrations:

Energy Exercises

Some astral projection teachers use energy exercises to induce or "call" the vibrations. The idea is: instead of performing out-of-body exit techniques, you relax and simply perform energy exercises. Robert Bruce and other authors recommend the microcosmic orbit used in Tai Chi and Qi Gong, where you visualize non-physical energy flowing like a river through your body in a circle, starting at the Dan Tien (belly button chakra) downward to the root chakra, back up the spine to the crown chakra, then back down to your Dan Tien again.

Other teachers recommend "Velo" (Voluntary Energetic Longitudinal Oscillation) and similar techniques where you try to develop a harmonic resonance with a disc of non-physical energy sweeping your entire body from your feet up to your head, and back down. Nanci Trivellato's book Vibrational State and Energy Resonance is 494 pages devoted to this technique and how to do it properly. If done properly, it can bring you the vibrations.

Another popular energy exercise is Kundalini, in which you visualize a stream of energy flowing from the Earth up to your root chakra, up your spine, exiting out through the crown chakra. I've never practiced kundalini yoga, but I've read stern warnings not to do it without proper guidance of a competent guru. You've been warned.

Technique Cycling

One of the most important contributions from Michael Raduga is the concept of OBE "technique cycling." Technique cycling is where you lie down, fully relaxed, and try for a few seconds (like maybe ten seconds) to use one OBE exit technique. For example, let's just say imagined rocking. If you've made no progress after ten seconds, switch to a different exit technique (say, phantom wiggling) and try that for another ten seconds. If there's still no progress, switch to a third exit technique (say, imagined floating.) If none of these three exit techniques induce the vibrations, start over with your original technique (imagined rocking). It's best to cycle through a small number of pre-selected techniques. If you try to think of different exit techniques to try, or select too many techniques your brain will engage too much. You should try to keep your mind as silent as possible, and keep it as simple and possible. Raduga suggests three.

Special Music

On rare occasions I have gotten the vibrations while meditating to music with my headphones on. It has always been when the music elicits a state of connection; it brings me into the zone. It's almost like the concept of a Koan in Zen Buddhism, a concept designed to jar your consciousness out of its normal pattern and bring you to a state of grace (like the sound of one hand clapping). In my case I've gotten the vibrations while listening to these songs:

Close to the Edge by Yes

Awaken by Yes

Ritual by Yes

And You and I by Yes (Is there a theme here?)

Cygnus X-1 by Rush

Echoes by Pink Floyd

Ashes Are Burning by Renaissance

Harness Unfamiliarity

In 2019 I wrote a blog article titled Harnessing Unfamiliarity. It is about how you should break your routines and try new things for your OBE practice: new locations, new beds, new directions. It can help.

Use Wake-Back-To-Bed (WBTB)

It may be easier to induce the vibrations if you use the Wake-Back-To-Bed (WBTB) technique. Again, this is one of the key concepts of Michael Raduga. For more detailed instructions, read this article from my blog:

Wake-Back-To-Bed Explained

The idea here is to interrupt your sleep after 6 hours (typically) with an alarm. Once your sleep is interrupted, stay awake for a brief period of time, then go back to bed and perform out-of-body exit techniques: the technique cycling I mentioned earlier. Many people find they can induce the vibrations easier when they practice after interrupted sleep.

Harness Your Fear

In 2017 I wrote an article for this blog about Turning the Tables On Fear. Part of the article was about how to use your fear to induce out-of-body experiences.

A couple years later I had a nightmare in which I was being attacked by a horrifying demonic monster, and I woke up with a start. In a way, this was a form of WBTB because the nightmare startled me awake.

Realizing it had just been a dream, I lay back down in bed and did an experiment. I visualized the monster's face, and as I did, a cold shiver ran through my body. As I focused on the monster, the shiver quickly developed into a mild form of the vibrations. I knew I could easily drop into an out-of-body state, but I hesitated: What if the monster was real and waiting for me on the other side? So I pulled myself back to full-body awareness and the vibrations faded away.

Just for fun, I visualized the monster's face again, and the vibrations came back. Now it became a challenge and a game! I spent about 10 minutes just pulling myself out of the vibrations and back in, just by visualizing the monster's face. I must have done it 10 times in a row. Eventually I got tired, gave up, and went back to a normal sleep with no more nightmares.

Conclusions

Hopefully this article gave you ideas to get you to the vibrational state, and from there fully to the out-of-body experience. problems inducing the out-of-body/astral projection state. Here are links to the previous
three articles in the series:

Problem 1: Nothing Happens

Problem 2: I Just Fall Asleep

Problem 3: The Vibrations Just Fade

In this article I'd like to focus on another common problem: You can get to the vibrations and are all set to take off, but suddenly you get scared and abort your attempt.

In a previous article I wrote about how the Guardian of the Threshold can manifest your subconscious fears and reservations in many strange ways, preventing you from inducing an out-of-body experience. If you hear voices--strange or familiar-- that try to talk you out of the OBE, ignore them: they're not real. The same goes for other weirdness, like phone calls, knocks on your door, or even ugly creatures, old hags, or demonic-looking creatures.

Fear can be a big show-stopper when it comes to astral projection. In fact, I dedicated an entire chapter of my first book to the problem of fear and how I had to overcome it before I could successfully self-induce OBEs. I even wrote another separate article on this blog on Turning the Tables on Fear.

When you start your OBE attempt it's easy to put on a brave face and tell yourself you're going to be strong and unflappable. But when you're finally out-of-body or deep in the vibrations, the reality of it (some would say shock and awe) can throw all your hard work and training all out the window. You may tell yourself, "I'm not ready for this" or "I'm in over my head" and abort the experience. That's the wrong attitude.

Someone once said that bravery is not being unafraid; it's acknowledging the fear and not letting it stop you. The fear is okay. The fear is natural. The fear is instinctual. But do not let it stop you.

In my experience the best thing to do is grant yourself some time. Make a deal with yourself. Tell yourself, "This time I'm not going to let it stop me. This time I'm just going to go along with it another ten seconds and see what happens." Usually that's all you need. Once the vibrations start and your fear-reaction sets in, you only need to ride it out for a few seconds until, poof, suddenly like magic, you find yourself fully out-of-body, embraced by a comfortable and calm silence. No more monsters, no bogeymen, no more vibrations or noises. It will all just suddenly disappear and you'll find yourself floating peacefully above your body in tranquility. Then the adventure begins!

To calm their fears, some people say a prayer of protection before their OBE attempt. It doesn't matter whether you pray to God, Jesus, Angels, Spirit Guides, Odin or whomever. It just needs to embody a sense of protection. If you're Wiccan or pagan, you can also perform a ritual of protection or cast a spell of protection.

Others choose to visualize a white light of protection surrounding your body.

Unfortunately, you cannot eliminate fear altogether because it is instinctual: our bodies have developed certain fears, such as fear of the unknown and fear of death, as a means of self-protection. So the best you can do is mitigate the fear, try to reason with it, and wait until it lessens with time and experience.

Bob Peterson,
10 January 2023

Here are links to the previous two articles in the series:

Problem 1: Nothing Happens

Problem 2: I Just Fall Asleep

In this article I'd like to focus on another common problem: You're able to induce a common precursor to out-of-body experience, "the vibrations," but they just fade away and don't produce an OBE.

In my 43+ years of experience, here is what I've learned:

The vibrations can be induced by turning your focus inward, narrowing down your focus into a tiny stream of watchful awareness, while letting go of all sensory input. In many cases it involves temporarily abandoning your thoughts, emotions, and expectations and just allowing it to happen: surrendering to whatever happens.

Once you accomplish all that, the vibrations often sweep into your body like a crescendo of electric energy, like touching a live electrical cable where some unknown force turns up the power more and more.

Needless to say, that can be quite jarring. I've written elsewhere that it's like getting slapped in the face: hard to ignore, especially when you've gone to such great lengths to make your mind quiet and still. And therein lies the problem: That slap-in-the-face jars you out of the proper state and brings back all those thoughts and emotions you worked so hard to eliminate. "Oh my God, it's happening! What do I do? Am I in danger?" On and on chatters the monkey-mind, once again out of control.

Although some so-called experts say you should try to encourage the vibrations, but in my experience it's best to ignore them altogether, remain calm and re-center. Or as they say in England, "Keep Calm and Carry On."

Return your mind back to that quiet, unfazed state with no thoughts and no emotions. In fact, I've experimented quite a bit with this state and found that when the vibrations sweep in:

If I try to encourage the vibrations, they fade away quickly.

If I try to think about the vibrations, they fade away slowly.

If I get scared or emotional about the vibrations, they fade away quickly.

If I do absolutely nothing, the vibrations reach their peak intensity then fade away slowly.

If I remain calm, bring my mind back to a quiet no-thought/no-emotion state, the vibrations come back, full force.

So my advice has always been:

Remain as passive and calm and possible, and try to just "observe." Tell yourself you've just going to wait and see what happens next.

When the vibrations reach their peak intensity, try to move physically: try to stand up, sit up, roll over, or similar.

If you're in the correct "vibrational state" your body will be in sleep paralysis, which means your physical body won't move, but your non-physical (or "astral") body will.

If you don't try to move, but instead imagine you're floating up in the air, or imagine you move away from the body, chances are nothing will happen. In my experience, just using your imagination is not enough to actually leave the body. For some people, it may work, but for me it doesn't.

Most people don't realize they're out-of-body at that point, so they forget to move their astral body as they would the physical body.

An interesting corollary is that the inverse can also be true; cause and effect may be reversed: In techniques like my "Almost Move Technique" and Michael Raduga's "Phantom Wiggling" technique, moving the non-physical body, even just a little, can induce the vibrations, whereas normally the vibrations can enable movement of the non-physical body.

In other words, moving the non-physical body (if you have good enough focus) can allow the vibrations to come, just as well as the vibrations can allow you to move your non-physical body.

Another interesting observation is what happens next: After the vibrations reach their peak, and after you've moved your non-physical body, everything changes: Your conscious awareness will then be completely associated with the non-physical body and the vibrations will suddenly and mysteriously disappear, as if you've left them behind along with your physical body. Then you can go about exploring the out-of-body state.

Bob Peterson,
13 December 2022

These are "Pre-OBE problems." Later I'll do a series of articles on Post-OBE problem solving.

Here's a link to the previous article: Problem 1: Nothing Happens.

This time I'll address a very common problem: you fall asleep when practicing. It happens to a lot of people, even the best of us. So here are some suggestions to solve it:

Practice in the morning

You're most likely to fall asleep if you practice right before bedtime. It's always best to make your OBE attempts in the morning, preferably right after you wake up from your last sleep cycle. That's when you should be more alert, conscious, and less tired. It's best to make your attempts right after you wake up, even before you even move your physical body.

Many people, myself included, need to get up early and go to work, which restricts the mornings on which you can practice. For that reason, I try to practice on the weekends and holidays.

When I was young and single, I used to spend Saturday and Sunday mornings trying to induce the OBE state: I'd wake up around 7:00 and start my OBE practice. After repeated attempts, I'd often give up and allow myself to drift back into sleep. Then I'd wake again around 8:30 and start practicing again. If that failed, I'd go into another sleep cycle and wake around 10:00, and try again. Some days I'd even go into a fourth cycle. Many days I didn't have that option because a neighbor would start mowing his/her lawn or countless other distractions.

Don't practice from your bed

We are all conditioned through years of habit to fall asleep when we are in our bedroom and in our bed. So you're much less likely to fall asleep when you practice from a couch, recliner, a chair, a hotel bed, or a bed at a friend's house. Some authors suggest setting asleep a special place, like a favorite couch, for your practice. That will condition your subconscious to think of it as your special OBE spot, and give you the right frame of mind.

Practice sitting up instead of lying down

I've had a vast majority of my OBEs lying down, but if falling asleep is a problem, you might be better able to focus if you're sitting up. Buddhist monks and other meditators often meditate sitting up. They often use a special meditation cushion and recommend keeping your back straight. It's worth a try.

Develop single-minded unwavering focus

We fall asleep by letting our minds drift. If you strive to maintain a single-minded unwavering focus, you're less likely to fall asleep. You need to silence the "Monkey Mind" and try to keep the inner thought-chatter to a minimum. The first few times you practice you may notice lots of mind-chatter (same goes for meditation), but the more you practice, the better you get at keeping your mind quiet, still and focused. It may take years or practice before you can keep your mind from its endless chatter.

Consider Caffeine

Author Michael Raduga suggests waking up very early in the morning or even the middle of the night, and slamming (quickly drinking) an energy drink, coffee, green tea or other drink with caffeine, then going back to sleep immediately before it takes effect. He claims to have good success doing this. Caffeine affects different people different ways. It's never kept me from sleeping, except in rare case. So you may want to experiment here.

Vary the amount of light in the room.

Our sleep cycles are greatly affected by the amount of light coming into the room where you practice. The more light, the harder it is to sleep. When people can't sleep at night it's often because they have too much light in their bedroom, and the solution is to make their bedroom as dark as possible by unplugging nightlights, putting black tape over LED charging indicators, turning off their cell phone's ambient display (or turning the phone over).

The opposite is also true when it comes to inducing OBEs: If you keep falling asleep, add more light to your practice area to inhibit sleep.

Don't be afraid to fall asleep

Lastly, don't be afraid to fall asleep. One common "rookie" mistake is to stay too alert and not let yourself get close enough to sleep. You need to carefully walk that knife-edge between awake and asleep. I've fallen off that edge and fallen asleep at least ten times for every successful out-of-body experience I've ever had. If you fall asleep, just chalk it up to experience and try again. Don't get discouraged, never lose hope, and don't stop praciticing.

Bob Peterson,
22 November 2022

Time flies whether you're having fun or not.

I'm a problem solver by my nature. In this series of articles I want to help solve some common astral projection/OBE problems. OBE problems can be classified into two types: pre-OBE and post-OBE.

Pre-OBE problems are encountered trying to achieve an out-of-body experience, but before you get there such as when the vibrations fade or when your heart starts beating wildly when you're trying to exit.

Post-OBE problems are problems that occur after you've left your body, like getting sucked back in prematurely or finding yourself glued to your physical body and unable to move.

First I'll focus on pre-OBE problems.

Today's article is about a common problem: You try to leave your physical body but nothing happens. Eventually you get bored and give up in disgust. This is a common problem, but you can take several steps to solve it.

Use your active imagination

If nothing happens, try to engage your active imagination. When we fall asleep, we un-focus. We kind of let our minds wander until our control slips away.

When you try to achieve an out-of-body experience, you still need to approach sleep, but when nothing happens it may help to focus on inner events.

Robert Monroe's "Lines of Force" Technique is just one example in which you learn to focus inward; in this case by imagining a two lines of energy extending from both sides of your head. Focusing on these lines of force engages your active imagination and gives you a focus on inward events. The trick is that you need to keep that inward focus as you approach sleep.

Get closer to sleep: walk that edge

When nothing happens it often means you're too far from the edge of sleep. If you just lie there and expect something to happen, chances are it won't, at least not until you get very close to sleep. One good exercise is to try to watch yourself fall asleep. See how close you can retain awareness of what happens around you before you lose your grip on consciousness.

Wait for hypnagogia

If you get very close to sleep, you will start to naturally hallucinate: you may see visual images called hypnagogic images, like fragments of ordinary objects like a pen or a book. You may hear auditory sounds like people whispering or saying fragments of sentences. This is all normal and natural, and all it means is that you're getting very close to sleep. These hypnagogic hallucinations happen to everyone, but most people are too unconscious to notice they happen. (There are also hallucinations as you come out of sleep called hypnopompic hallucinations and you can use these to your advantage too).

After several years of practice I got to the point where I can see hypnagogic images almost immediately after lying down.

My favorite OBE technique involves taking control and manipulating the hypnagogic images. So if nothing happens, you just need to get closer to sleep.

Don't be afraid to fall asleep

One of the most common problems is that people are afraid of falling asleep during OBE practice. They keep themselves vigilant and alert so they can pay attention to the sensations like the vibrations, or to keep a watchful eye out for those hypnagogic images. The problem is: if you're too alert, it's never going to happen. If you're too wide awake, you'll never see them. So don't be afraid to fall asleep during practice.

I like to tell people I've fallen asleep at least 10 or more times for every successful out-of-body experience I've ever had. Chock it up to experience. And after you fall asleep, you may wake up after the sleep cycle and mentally scold yourself, "Well, damn, that's another attempt wasted." But it's all part of the learning process. It happens to the best of us. Like the Windows operating system: reset, reboot, and restart.

When I was young I used to spend hours trying over and over: walking that edge, falling asleep, waking up and trying again. It's easy to get discouraged, but don't despair: just accept it and try again later.

Again: If you're too alert you'll never get to the OBE state. Nothing will happen. You need to "let go." You need to get very very very close to sleep, and you need to straddle that thin line of sleep. It's a razor's edge, but once you get there, you only need to maintain that "thin line" for a few seconds, like seven or so seconds until the vibrations hit and you're home free (of your body).

Don't be afraid to move

Many people don't realize that you actually need to initiate movement like you do in the physical body. Some astral projection books say to leave your body, just imagine yourself floating and you will float. Maybe that works fine for some people but for me it usually doesn't. I need to initiate movement. Just like Michael Raduga's "Phantom Wiggling" technique, it's more than using your imagination. It's like actually moving your non-physical body.

My rule of thumb is: Wait for the vibrations to reach their peak, then try to either physically get up, physically stand up, physically roll over, or my personal favorite, swing your arms. This is identical to moving your physical body. There is no difference. If your physical body moves, you weren't in a deep enough trance and need to go deeper for your next attempt.

If you don't try to physically move, it's very likely that "nothing will happen." You need to initiate that non-physical movement.

What should happen is that sleep paralysis will keep your physical body frozen. Your physical body should stay put and your non-physical body (astral body, whatever) should move.

Many people just lie there and do nothing, not even realizing they have left their body until they eventually fall asleep. You need to be proactive about this.

In my next article, I'll cover another common pre-OBE problem: "My OBEs are too short."

Bob Peterson,
08 November 2022
